As a Senior Software Engineer at Nium, you will be a key contributor within a cross-functional team, collaborating with stakeholders across the organisation to design, build, and maintain our core platforms. You will leverage your experience to develop robust, scalable solutions to complex challenges, playing a critical role in the ongoing transformation of our technology landscape.
In this hands-on role, you will actively contribute to development efforts while mentoring fellow engineers and guiding the team toward high standards of technical excellence. You will take ownership of code quality and foster a culture of continuous improvement through constructive feedback and leadership by example.
You will advocate for engineering best practices, drive enhancements to tools and processes, and promote collaboration and knowledge sharing. Based in Malta, you will help lead a talented engineering team in building innovative payment technologies that are shaping the future of the industry.
\n Responsibilities:- Platform & Business Acumen
Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the company's software platforms, business logic, infrastructure, and delivery processes.
- Technical Leadership
Lead the design and planning of technical and product initiatives.
Make informed engineering decisions aligned with business objectives.
Act as a subject matter expert and set the benchmark for code quality and best practices.
- Team Contribution & Delivery
Collaborate within a cross-functional team to deliver high-quality software solutions.
Take ownership of the team’s output, ensuring adherence to quality and process standards.
- Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing
Mentor engineers through code reviews, pair programming, and project leadership.
Contribute to team development through training sessions, technical talks, and informal mentoring.
- Problem Solving & Process Improvement
Identify technical challenges and lead the development of effective solutions.
Enhance team collaboration by identifying skill gaps or inefficiencies and recommending actionable improvements.
- Communication & Alignment
Clearly communicate technical decisions, standards, and processes.
Foster a culture of transparency, open communication, and shared ownership.
- Talent Development
Support recruitment efforts by participating in hiring processes and providing feedback on candidate competencies.
Requirements:- 5+ years of experience in designing and building robust, scalable software systems
- Strong passion for engineering and a pragmatic approach to high-quality delivery
- Up to date with current development trends, technologies, and best practices
- Solid understanding of modern software engineering methodologies and delivery processes
- Deep expertise in Java and frameworks like Spring and Spring Boot
- Strong SQL and relational database design skills, including performance tuning and query optimization
- Proficient in designing and consuming RESTful APIs
- Familiarity with OpenAPI for API documentation
- Comfortable working with modern frontend frameworks such as Angular and React
- Experience or familiarity with tools like MySQL, Kafka, Zookeeper, Docker, and Kubernetes
- Skilled in version control, build configuration, and automation tooling
- Advocate for software quality through automated and manual testing
- Proficient with unit testing frameworks and related tools
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Strong team player who provides leadership and guidance on key initiatives
