Assistant Director of Athletics & Recreation

Reporting to the Director of Athletics and Recreation, the Assistant Director will assist with overall administration of department functions. Specifically, the Assistant Director will be responsible for compliance, scheduling and facility management, and will play a key role in implementing / assessing special projects and initiatives aimed at department growth and student development. The role is critical to the support of FIT's Future//Forward Strategic Plan.

Compliance & Student-Athlete Eligibility

  • Ensure department-wide compliance with state and federal laws as well as NJCAA / Region 15 Athletic Conference, FIT and Department of Athletics and Recreation bylaws and policies.
  • Prepare NJCAA student-athlete eligibility files, make determinations on student-athlete eligibility in compliance with NJCAA / Region 15 Athletic Conference bylaws and certify athletic department eligibility with the NJCAA.
  • Maintain internal compliance records and assure ongoing completion of required trainings / certifications for employees and student-athletes on topics including but not limited to: Title IX, Title IV, Campus Security Act, Clery Act, diversity / equity / inclusion, concussion management, CPR/AED / First Aid, health and safety, employee code of ethical conduct, equipment use, teaching certification, and game official evaluations.

Athletics & Recreation Operations

  • Regulate the use of athletic facilities and respond to facility requests from internal and external entities.
  • Coordinate with coaches and other institutions to schedule intercollegiate athletic contests and maintain game contracts.
  • Arrange and administer recreational sport tournaments open to all students.
  • Develop and maintain written standard operating procedures for recreation; monitor operations to increase operational efficiency and employee performance.
  • Provide site supervision for, or represent FIT at regular season athletics contests, Region 15 Athletic Conference Championship events, and / or NJCAA National Championship events as assigned.

Staff Supervision & Workforce Management

  • Supervise the Athletics & Recreation Associate, ensure recreation programs operate in a safe / welcoming environment and meet student needs.
  • Monitor the scheduling of Fitness Supervisors, Group Fitness Instructors, Student Health Fitness Assistants (SHFCAs), mascot, staff for special campus events, and game staff; ensure that all shifts are adequately staffed and that part-time employee schedules remain in compliance with department policies and labor laws / FIT Human Resources regulations.
  • Assure that department events are promoted on FIT's events calendar website / app, monitor to assure continued proper functioning / advertising throughout each semester.
  • Assist in the recruitment and hiring process for departmental vacancies and support employee retention initiatives.

Student Engagement, Programming & Partnerships

  • Coordinate student-athlete academic support services including but not limited to academic advisement and priority registration processes.
  • Assist in developing partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to enhance student engagement and the overall student-athlete experience.
  • Assist in planning and implementing special events and departmental initiatives, including the Athletic Awards ceremony.
  • Support promotion of the FIT Athletics brand through innovative programming, events, and social media/marketing initiatives.

Assessment, Strategy & Institutional Collaboration

  • Support departmental assessment initiatives by developing and updating assessment instruments, coordinating data collection, and analyzing trends to inform program improvement.
  • Engage in continuous professional development to support departmental growth objectives.
  • Collaborate with campus departments and serve on committees as assigned.
  • Attend regional and national meetings in the absence of the Director of Athletics and Recreation.

Job Requirements:


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in athletic administration, business management or a related field required.
  • 3 years of professional compliance experience in Higher Education Athletics.
  • Availability to travel and / or work evenings and weekends.
  • Valid driver's license in good standing required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in athletic administration, business management or a related field preferred.
  • 5 years of professional compliance experience in Higher Education Athletics.
  • Compliance experience on the NJCAA level.

Additional Information:


Please note all offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of the background check process.

Salary

Salary: $76,915.17 - $85,513.87 per year; commensurate with experience and qualifications. Step increments per Salary Schedule 93C, after one year of service and annually thereafter.

Terms

The Assistant Director of Athletics & Recreation position is an auxiliary, at-will position, funded by student fees.

Work Schedule

Days/Hours: M-F, 9am-5pm, in person; evenings and weekends as needed; work schedule subject to change based on needs of the department.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

The working conditions for this position will be primarily in an office space but may include outdoor, or noisy indoor environments such as gymnasiums, fitness centers and fitness classrooms when required.
