Visiting Lecturer in Linguistic Anthropology
The Department of Anthropology at New York University invites applications for a one-year position as a Visiting Lecturer in Linguistic Anthropology. The appointment will begin September 1, 2026, subject to potential renewal for a maximum of three years, pending administrative and budgetary approval.
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in linguistic anthropology during the 2026-2027 academic year and will complement the department's strengths in research and teaching on language, communication, and power. Applicants must hold a PhD in linguistic anthropology, anthropology, or linguistics and demonstrate sustained scholarly engagement in linguistic anthropology and/or anthropological linguistics.
This visiting appointment emphasizes high-quality instruction, effective student advising and mentorship, and participation in the intellectual life of the department and the broader university during the term of the appointment.
The Visiting Lecturer will teach four courses during the academic year, including two graduate-level seminars and two undergraduate courses in linguistic anthropology. Courses that align particularly well with departmental needs include, but are not limited to, graduate seminars on Field Methods in Studies of Language and Culture; Language Revitalization; and Multilingualism, and undergraduate courses on Language and Technology; Language, Migration, and Globalization; and Language, Ethnicity, and Nationalism.
Additional responsibilities include developing and updating course materials; supervising undergraduate research projects and honors theses, as appropriate; and advising and mentoring students from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds during the period of appointment.
Applicants must demonstrate an active research agenda in linguistic anthropology. Research interests may include, but are not limited to, language and social interaction; language ideologies; multilingualism; language and power; race, gender, inequality; or language in institutional, digital, or transnational contexts.
Scholarly work may be ethnographic, theoretical, applied, or collaborative in orientation and may include peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, public-facing scholarship, digital or archival projects, and contributions to language documentation, revitalization, or related initiatives. The Visiting Lecturer is encouraged to integrate research and teaching through course design and student engagement, as appropriate for a visiting appointment.

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary for this position is $60,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
