Joseph Will Academy is an innovative education and workforce development organization preparing communities for sustainable careers in the green energy sector . Our programs equip participants, including formerly incarcerated individuals , with industry-recognized credentials and hands-on training for real-world success.
We are currently seeking a Solar Instructor to lead our Intro to Solar Installation course, part of our Green Energy Workforce Development initiative.
Position Overview
The Solar Instructor will teach participants the fundamentals of solar installation through both classroom instruction and hands-on lab training. This role focuses on building foundational skills for entry-level employment in the solar industry while fostering a supportive and empowering learning environment for re-entry participants.
The ideal candidate has real-world solar experience, proven instructional ability, and a commitment to helping justice-involved individuals transition successfully into meaningful careers.
Core Curriculum Topics
Your instruction will align with entry-level solar industry standards and cover:
- Fundamentals of Photovoltaic (PV) systems
- Solar panel components and system layout
- Basic electrical principles for solar installations
- Solar mounting systems (ground and simulated roof applications)
- Inverter and battery storage basics
- Jobsite safety, tools, and industry best practices
- Teamwork, professionalism, and career readiness in the solar field
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging instruction and hands-on training in solar installation techniques.
- Develop and maintain lesson plans, assessments, and instructional materials.
- Supervise lab activities using safety-compliant tools and materials.
- Support participants with varying educational and employment backgrounds.
- Apply de-escalation and trauma-informed practices to maintain a safe learning environment.
- Track attendance, progress, and certification milestones.
- Collaborate with program staff on job placement and workforce readiness.
Qualifications
Minimum 3 years of professional experience in solar installation or a related electrical/construction trade.
Prior teaching, training, or apprenticeship supervision experience strongly preferred.
Familiarity with PV system design, OSHA standards , and current industry practices.
Ability to teach justice-impacted or high-barrier populations with empathy and structure.
NABCEP certification (or eligibility) preferred but not required.
Strong communication, organization, and classroom management skills.

- Experience working with formerly incarcerated individuals or re-entry programs.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and workforce inclusion.
- Hands-on instructional experience with solar or electrical tools.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish or English/Creole) a plus.
Work Schedule
- Contract-based (30 hours) per Cohort
- Weekday classes daytime: 8am - 2pm
- Located in Brooklyn, NY, with potential travel to partner sites across Queens, Bronx, Manhattan, or Staten Island
Compensation
- $40–$60/hour based on credentials and instructional experience
