Duties Description The New York State Education Department (NYSED) is seeking a dynamic and experienced educator and historian to serve as an Education Specialist (African American History Coordinator) within the Office of Education Policy. This newly created role will focus on leading the implementation of key education-related recommendations outlined in the New York State African American History Commission's report which is the culmination of Executive Order No. 15: Establishing the 400 Years of African American History Commission. Under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner for P-12 Instructional Support, the incumbent of this position will be responsible for leading the implementation of the recommendations from the New York State African American History Commission's report, including developing curricular resources, expanding professional learning opportunities for educators, and coordinating stakeholder engagement to promote inclusive and historically accurate instruction:- Collaborate with the State Historian for African American History to review and revise the NYS teaching standards to incorporate African and African American history;- Participate in monthly project team calls and provide written summaries, including project status narratives, updates on deliverables, and detailed meeting minutes to ensure clear communication and progress tracking;- Develop and manage the process for submitting an RFP to determine any vendors needed to create curricular resources that address the teaching of significant contributions and experiences of African Americans;- Coordinate, oversee, and monitor the contract between NYSED and the identified vendors and engage in clear and consistent communication;- Design and execute a Black/African American Student Leadership Program in partnership with the NYS Assembly and the NYS Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and Asian Legislative Caucus to promote civic engagement, leadership development, and student voice;- Develop and implement a New York State Seal for African American History, modeled after the Seal of Civic Readiness and the Seal of Biliteracy, to recognize students' achievement in African American history;- Collaborate closely with the Office of Teacher and Leader Development to update New York State Teaching and Educational Leadership Standards to reflect values and priorities identified in the Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education (CRS-E) Framework;- Partner with the New York State Museum to incorporate an African American History component into the Archives Student Research Awards Program;- Prepare reports regarding updates and correspondence for P-12 management and;- Work alongside NYSED staff to prepare and present initiative updates to the Board of Regents.

Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must possess a master's degree or higher in Education, History, African American Studies, or related field and seven years of experience in K-12 education, curriculum development, or museum education utilizing a strong diversity, equity, and inclusion lens, including culturally responsive strategies. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: New York State Certification in English or Social Studies, experience managing large scale education projects with multiple stakeholders and timelines.It is essential that candidates clearly and concisely indicate exactly how they meet the above minimum qualifications in their resume. Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a temporary, hourly position appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees' negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of master's degree will be required at the time of interview for all candidates. This position allows for the opportunity to telecommute up to 30% each bi-weekly pay period and is granted at the discretion of the supervisor and the appointing office. This position will require up to 30% in-state/Statewide travel. The hiring rate of this position is commensurate with experience.For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position.
