The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Division of Environmental Health works to prevent and control illness and injury related to environmental and occupational health risks through outreach, education, surveillance, and enforcement. With staff of 1,000, the Division covers a broad range of subject matter, including oversight of environmental investigations, lead poisoning, injury prevention, occupational health, food safety, childcare, radiation control, recreational and drinking water quality, air quality, climate health, vector control, veterinary public health and pest control. The New York City Department of Health is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Associate Rodentologist to join our Rodent Control team. This role is central to advancing the city's integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, supporting public health, and improving quality of life across all five boroughs ”especially in communities most impacted by rodent-related health risks.


DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

  • Assist with ongoing surveillance and mapping of rat populations throughout New York City, contributing to data-driven mitigation strategies.
  • Develop innovative community integrated pest management strategies.
  • Design and implement community-integrated pest management approaches that are sustainable, equitable, and effective.
  • Research studies that analyze rat populations and rat management techniques.
  • Inform pest control operations improvement and assist in trouble shooting processes and procedures while actively engaged in research
  • Support applied research on urban rat ecology, population dynamics, and rodenticide efficacy. Contribute to translating findings into actionable improvements for field operations.
  • On pest management issues, provide technical advice to other programs in the Department.
  • Play an active role with teaching in the development and management of the Department's Rodent Academy which provides IPM training to hundreds of pest management professionals and city agency staff each year.
  • Provide continuing education annually to the over 170 staff currently working in the VPCS Bureau.
  • Provide guidance to the Senior Extermination staff on the field trials and purchase of new Rodenticide products and advise staff on updates/changes to product labels.
Preferred Skills:

  • Advanced degree in biology, public health, entomology, urban ecology, or a related field preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in rodent ecology, pest management, or environmental health
  • Strong communication and teaching skills
  • Familiarity with IPM principles and urban pest control technologies
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with diverse communities

Minimum Qualifications


1. For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.
To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:
1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
2. A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above.

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.
