Job Description
The Phlebotomist II supports a fast-paced laboratory environment by performing high-quality specimen collection, handling, and processing, while also contributing to troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement. This role focuses on accurate venipuncture and specimen management, clear communication with patients and clinical staff, and strict adherence to laboratory protocols and safety regulations.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws using venipuncture techniques, including straight needles and butterfly needles, in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols.
- Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes to ensure complete and accurate identification.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the specific test order.
- Check all test requisitions or computer labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
- Package specimens securely for transport and maintain specimen integrity by following required temperature and handling guidelines.
- Place samples in the appropriate collection containers or tubes and apply accurate labeling according to protocol.
- Follow specific procedures for specimen transport to preserve the quality and integrity of each sample.
- Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing and specimen requirements.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as needed to support a clean and safe laboratory environment.
- Update patient information accurately in the designated systems to ensure proper tracking and reporting of results.
- Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results or information, as appropriate, to satisfy inquiries.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance standards.
- Attend annual department trainings and participate in ongoing education to maintain skills and stay current with procedures.
- Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, and workflow within the laboratory.
- Contribute to training and support of colleagues by sharing best practices and demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques.
- Make recommendations to improve workflow efficiency and quality within the laboratory or collection environment.
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Approximately 2–4 years of overall related experience in phlebotomy or clinical laboratory support.
- Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including blood draws and venipuncture.
- Ability to perform specimen labeling, centrifugation, splitting, freezing, and packaging according to test requirements.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate matching of requisitions and labels to specimen tubes.
- Ability to understand and follow physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
- Knowledge of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations and other relevant safety standards.
- Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients.
- Customer service skills to handle patient interactions and telephone inquiries professionally.
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) or equivalent phlebotomy certification.
- Experience providing high-quality customer service in a healthcare or laboratory environment.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize work in a fast-paced setting.
- Comfort working with various specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples.
- Willingness to participate in ongoing training and departmental education.
- Strong problem-solving skills to assist with troubleshooting workflow or specimen issues.
This position operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment that emphasizes accuracy, safety, and efficient patient service. The role involves frequent venipuncture and specimen handling, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, and requires strict adherence to established protocols and regulatory standards such as OSHA and DEP. You will use standard phlebotomy tools and equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and computer systems for labeling and data entry, as well as Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday between approximately 6:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. with varied hours, along with rotating Saturday shifts from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The environment supports ongoing training and annual departmental education to maintain high-quality practices and professional development.

This is a Contract position based out of Liverpool, NY.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $21.00 - $21.00/hr.
