Who We Are:  CAMBA is a community of staff, volunteers, clients, donors, neighbors and partners who work together to build an inclusive New York City, where all children and adults have access to the resources and supports they need to thrive.  We take a comprehensive approach by offering more than 180 integrated programs in:  Education & Youth Development, Family Support, Job Training & Employment Support Services, Health, Housing, and Legal Services. We reach more than 72,000 individuals and families each year at our 100 locations, including 10,000 youth.  CAMBA serves a diverse cross section of New Yorkers from new mothers in Brownsville to job seekers in the Rockaways. More than half of our clients are immigrants and refugees from around the globe. Over 85% of our families live in poverty, reflecting the challenges faced by nearly 1.7 million New Yorkers today.

CAMBA operates six transitional housing facilities for families with children experiencing homelessness funded by New York City Department of Homeless Services. Each facility offers clients a supportive, structured, therapeutic, safe, and drug-free environment. We provide comprehensive case management and housing placement services to ensure that families move to permanent housing as quickly as possible. Recreation and evidence-based programming is also available to enhance the services to the families, school aged children as well for parenting support and support to young adults.

What Does the Recreation Coordinator Do:

  • Maintain professional relationships with clients and client confidentiality.
  • Practice Universal Precautions/Standard Protocol & Procedures.
  • Comply with any and all Federal, State, City and CAMBA security and privacy polices intended to protect the security and privacy of individually identifiable health information.
  • Organize and lead recreational/ADL activities to enhance the social development of individual group members.
  • Facilitate and/or teach physical education, arts, music, or drama.
  • Plan and organize activities to maximize program contract's goals and performance targets.
  • Plan and organize activities within the facility and the community including volunteers, to maximize the program contract’s goals and performance targets.
  • Plan, coordinate and facilitate social/peer support events, including group facilitation for clients.
  • Design and produce aesthetic visuals for public spaces of the shelter which reflect cultural, seasonal and programmatic themes.
  • Maintain and post a weekly and/or monthly calendar of all client programmatic activities occurring internally and externally.
  • Input client data using the DHS CARES database, as needed.
  • Escort clients, as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, direct reporting staff, peers, supervisors, and funders.
  • Ensure compliance with DHS policies governing facility access, visitor management, client confidentiality, information sharing, photography, and recording while conducting recreation programming and events.
  • Safeguard the confidentiality and privacy of clients by preventing the unauthorized disclosure of client information, shelter residency, or personally identifiable information in accordance with DHS and CAMBA policies.
  • Coordinate recreational activities involving volunteers, vendors, community organizations, and outside partners while ensuring all visitors comply with DHS facility access and security procedures.
  • Monitor recreation activities to ensure no unauthorized photography, video recording, audio recording, or live streaming of clients occurs within the facility, and immediately address and report violations in accordance with DHS procedures.
  • Respond appropriately to requests for client information or facility access from visitors, media, law enforcement, or outside agencies by following DHS procedures and notifying facility leadership when required.
  • Protect the integrity of client records and information entered into DHS CARES and other agency systems by complying with all applicable confidentiality and information-sharing requirements.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment by enforcing DHS facility access and privacy procedures during all recreational programming and community events.
  • Encourage teamwork among direct reporting staff as well as among peers.
  • Troubleshoot client and direct reporting staff problems and make decisions in accordance with program policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Work with direct reporting staff to improve work performance through client feedback, training, weekly documentation of one-on-one supervision of staff.
  • Motivate, coach and counsel direct reporting staff to excel.
  • Overcome resistance to change from clients, direct reporting staff, and supervisors/funders.
  • Administer constructive discipline to direct reporting staff, as needed.
  • Manage own time effectively and coordinate program activities to maximize time of direct reporting staff.
  • Monitor clients' progress toward their goals and document via progress notes.
  • Lead and participate in administrative and staff meetings as requested.
  • Provide all required information for weekly/monthly/quarterly/semester/annual reports to CAMBA management and/or to funders.
  • Review and sign timesheets.
  • Prepare performance appraisals for direct reporting staff.
  • May prepare marketing materials for the program.
  • May reach out and market the program to the community in order to develop additional resources for the program.
  • May conduct initial intake or assessment of clients.
  • May have direct client service/program responsibilities in addition to the above
  • Task may be modified, expanded and/or assigned over time

MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Applicants currently enrolled in a program and on track to complete the minimum required education, license, and/or certification within the next three months, and who meet the minimum experience requirements, are encouraged to apply. However, employment is contingent upon satisfying requirements for the position.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIRED

  • Four (4) years of applicable experience.
    PRE AND / OR POST EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bilingual (English & any other language) preferred.
