Communication / public support officer
The Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United Nations has a full-time (40 hours per week) vacancy for a Communication / Public Diplomacy Support Officer. Knowledge of the Dutch language is required. The Communication/Public Diplomacy Support Officer is part of team under the direction of the Deputy Head of Mission.

Job description:
In consultation with the Deputy Permanent Representative and the Spokesperson you will be, amongst others, responsible for handling our social media platforms. Through social media you will be showcasing the work of the Kingdom of the Netherlands at the United Nations in New York for the national (Dutch) and international audience. You will highlight our policy objectives, main priorities and activities.
This entails that you will:
o increase transparency and a positive positioning of the Kingdom of the Netherlands;
o enhance interaction with relevant stakeholders such as other missions, the UN, think tanks, and civil society;
o develop tailor-made communication strategies and campaigns throughout the year for a wide variety of UN meetings / committees as well as for the different candidatures of the Kingdom of the Netherlands;
o come up with creative ideas to get the best visible outcome and the widest outreach possible and coordinate the social media output;
o identify opportunities, stimulate colleagues to contribute and advise on which types of messages can be published and on which platform, taking political sensitivities into account.
In addition, you will be responsible for co-identifying and executing public diplomacy projects and contribute to optimizing the communication strategy of the Mission and its public diplomacy policy.
Profile of the candidate:
You are creative and used to taking initiatives. You know how to transform concepts into attractive, accessible visual output on social media. You enjoy drafting content with colleagues, including taking pictures and recording video messages.
The job is of a multifaceted nature and no two days will be the same. You are stress-resistant and not frazzled by (sometimes short) deadlines.
We are looking for someone who has broad experience (at least 3-5 years) with social media platforms. Please hand in a portfolio/example of your work with your application.

General features of job
q You will be part of the Political Affairs and Communication Departments and work under the supervision of the Deputy Permanent Representative and the Spokesperson. You will work together with all the colleagues at the mission on COM-content and PD-projects.
q You will be creating the Mission’s social media content (with a focus on the visual aspect) and will be responsible for the development and execution of the COM and PD Strategy for the mission, which includes the monitoring of the PD-budget.
q You will be the photographer, creative designer and website editor of the mission.
q You will coordinate the timeline of events.
q You will support the Election Officer in lobbying for UN elections and campaigns.
q You will coordinate incoming student groups / schools (i.e. Model United Nations)
q You will create the communication campaigns surrounding the candidatures of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, together with the Election Officer.
q You show awareness of (data) security challenges and the need for discretion in a diplomatic environment.
Duties
Description of duties:
Contributing to the COM/PD strategy as well as executing it which, amongst others, means:
· Assisting and inspiring colleagues with social media messaging;
· Providing attractive visuals for social media and campaigning materials (including video’s);
· Assisting in organizing PD-events of the mission;
· Coordinating communication campaigns surrounding the several candidatures of the Kingdom of the Netherlands with the Election Officer.
· Organizing visits of (student) groups;
· Keeping the website of the Mission up-to-date;
· Informing the Mission of relevant international days to be used for PD and create attractive content.

At the Permanent Mission we represent the Kingdom of the Netherlands (the Netherlands, Aruba, Sint Maarten, and Curaçao) at the United Nations in New York. - Permanent Representative
- Deputy Permanent Representative/Head of Political Affairs and Communication Departments
- Heads of the other departments: Development Cooperation, Humanitarian Affairs and Human Rights; Military and Police Affairs; and Operational Management/Service Desk New York
- 17 Policy staff
- Approximately 17 support staff: secretarial-administrative staff, General Affairs staff, receptionist, user support staff, drivers, housekeeping staff, most of whom work for both Permanent Mission and CG within the framework of the New York Service Desk.
The workload is usually heavy throughout the year due to many conferences, committee meetings, negotiations and other activities. The team does strive to create moments to recuperate. The autumn session of the General Assembly creates a peak load. Throughout the year, campaigns for various candidatures also generate a significant workload. Although we regularly have to work under pressure, the atmosphere is great; The 'one team' idea applies across the board!

q Understanding of social media platforms and their operations (posting messages, creating content etc.) and skilled in using social media like X, Instagram, Youtube, and LinkedIn, and posting content to websites;
q Understanding of/having a feel for working in an international environment and with a culturally diverse audience;
q Understanding of political contexts and sensitivities;
q Skilled in setting priorities regarding the different support tasks and weighing up consequences, interests etc.;
q Skilled in working under varying conditions and time pressure;
q Skilled in Windows-driven MS Office programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint;
q Good command of written and oral communication skills in the English and Dutch language is required;
q Experience in using data analytics to evaluate performance of social media channels and campaigns;
q Excellent writing skills (English, Dutch) with exceptional spelling, grammar, punctuation, and knowledge of how to write for the web and social media;
q Direct experience and a strong understanding of producing and editing visual media for social media, with a strong preference for Canva, Premiere Pro, and Adobe Creative Suite experience;
