NBA Equity Principal

Job Summary

The position will play a crucial role in identifying and evaluating investment opportunities for NBA Equity, the NBA's corporate venture capital division. This position will participate in the identification, analysis, and execution of potential investments in promising startups and growth-stage companies and will work closely across multiple internal NBA constituencies to gather and prioritize strategic investment focus areas.

Major Responsibilities:

Deal Sourcing / Research

• Identify investment opportunities through market research and various deal-sourcing channels.

• Conduct initial screening of investment opportunities based on strategic fit, financial viability, and growth potential.

• Introduce exciting new opportunities to internal parties for potential partnership opportunities and drive innovation at the NBA.

• Conduct research around industry trends, market dynamics, and emerging technologies to inform investment decisions and strategy.

• Develop a company database to track key industry metrics and serve as an internal benchmarking tool.

Investment Analysis

• Conduct comprehensive due diligence on prospective investments, including financial analysis, market research, competitive landscape assessment, and risk evaluation.

• Collaborate with subject matter experts internally to assess strategic fit and upside potential within the organization.

• Assist in preparing investment recommendations for the Investment Committee and SLT.

• Help negotiate deal terms and conduct legal due diligence.

Portfolio Support

• Work closely with portfolio companies to identify critical operating challenges and find ways to leverage NBA Equity's network and capabilities to address those matters.

• Actively engage internal subject matter experts, commercial partners, and NBA teams to provide impactful insights and growth opportunities.

Required Skills/Knowledge Attributes:

• Strong analytical ability and proficiency in financial modeling, business valuation, and data analysis

• Familiarity with venture capital / private equity / M&A transactions and processes.

• Knowledge of startup ecosystems, industry trends, and emerging technologies.

• Ability to understand term sheet and identify key issues to negotiate.

• Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and concisely.

• Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in data analysis.

• Creative & innovative thinker with analytical & entrepreneurial mindset.

• Team player who can work collaboratively in a cross-functional environment internally and network externally.

Required Education/Professional Experience:

• Minimum 6 - 9 years of relevant work experience.

• Recent venture capital, private equity, or corporate development experience, with prior experience working at consulting firms or investment banks.

• Experience recommending investments and executing deals.

• Bachelor's degree in finance, business, economics, or a related field.

• Advanced degrees such as MBA preferred.

Salary Range: $170,000 - $190,000
