Chemistry & Chemical Biology is the largest and most complex academic department in CAS and it is also one of the largest teaching and sponsored research departments in the university. It is an internationally prestigious department home to distinguished faculty that includes one of Cornells Nobel prize winners. The department has 35 tenure track faculty positions and employs more than 70 other academics approximately 45 regular non-academic staff (many of the non-academic staff report either directly or indirectly to the senior manager) and a varying number of visiting scientists and other researchers. The non-academic positions range from administrative financial IT and facilities positions to research support specialists. They have one of the largest graduate student programs in the university with approximately 200 graduate students. The undergraduate program is also very complex with the department teaching approximately 6000 students per year in approximately 200 courses (and many of these courses require a separate laboratory component). The department occupies two large science buildings comprising 340000 square feet and more than 30000 additional square feet in the physical sciences building. The annual total department expenditures is approximately $23.5- addition the senior department manager is responsible for remotely overseeing all business and university policy compliance for the Northeastern Collaborative Access Team (NE-CAT) facility at Argonne National Lab (outside Chicago). Ne-Cat employs a dozen academic scientists and staff.

The Department Manager provides senior level management support for the business and administrative operations of a large academic department with an extensive and complex teaching program and very active research faculty. Works directly with and under supervision of department Chair with dotted line reporting to the Associate Dean for Administration. Manages the business and administrative operations and planning and oversees a large cohort of non-academic administrative staff. Areas of responsibility include personnel curriculum and enrollment support operations finance research administration facilities management (in partnership with A&S Facilities) and the interpretation and implementation of human resource financial and other administrative policies.

The Manager serves as a resource to faculty and other supervisors to help manage the administrative functions associated with research and instructional support. Guides staff in providing substantial assistance to Principal Investigators with grants and addition the manager must coordinate relationships and activities across these areas and understand and manage the cross-functional impact of program and resource decisions. S/he is also expected to institute and maintain sound administrative procedures to ensure consistency fairness and compliance in operations and to manage or support long range planning projects for the chair and faculty with respect to resources operations and policy development.

The Manager is the main contact for other sectors of the university with respect to non-academic matters and will be charged with effectively communicating and collaborating with college and university offices as well as other units on campus to benefit the department. A major challenge for the senior managers position is coordinating the operations planning and relationships for such a large and complex department.

Required Qualifications:

Masters degree plus 5-7 years of managerial supervisory and financial experience or equivalent combination. The Department Manager is a generalist and as such this position requires competencies across the functional areas. Requires strong supervisory managerial organizational analytical and problem-solving skills and experience as well as a solid background in financial and technological matters (e.g. databases CU administrative & financial systems). A proven ability to simultaneously manage multiple areas events and deadlines evidence of strong interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to cultivate and maintain a collaborative and effective work environment are a must. Experience successfully managing a large group of employees who provide a broad range of support -depth understanding and appreciation of academic department business activities is important.

Preferred Qualifications: Several years of managerial experience in an academic unit grant and contract management experience are highly desirable.
