JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Equity Compliance and Student Engagement serves as The Cooper Union’s Title IX and Title VI Coordinator and plays a key leadership role in fostering an equitable, safe, and inclusive campus environment. Reporting directly to the President on all matters related to Title IX and Title VI compliance, the Director ensures institutional adherence to federal, state, and local regulations, develops and implements policies and training programs, and provides oversight of investigations and grievance processes.
In collaboration with and reporting to the Dean of Students for student engagement responsibilities, the Director also contributes to the overall student experience by supporting programs, initiatives, and partnerships that promote community, leadership development, and student wellbeing. This position serves as a critical link between compliance, student affairs, and institutional leadership—advancing The Cooper Union’s commitment to equity, accountability, and belonging across the campus community.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
I. Title IX and Title VI Coordination
Policy, Training, and Compliance

  • Advise the President and senior leadership on compliance and make policy recommendations related to Titles IX and VI and related nondiscrimination laws.
  • Participate in and ensure annual training on the College’s obligations pursuant to Titles IX and VI.
  • Consult regularly with the Dean of Students, campus leadership, and all campus stakeholders to promote campus-wide awareness and discussion of Titles IX and VI-related issues and develop and implement any modifications of policies and procedures to prevent and eliminate sex discrimination, including sexual misconduct.
  • Develop, provide, or coordinate regular training, consultation, and technical assistance for students, faculty, staff, and trustees.

Investigations and Resolution

  • Oversee impartial, prompt, and thorough investigations of complaints related to sexual misconduct, discrimination, and harassment based on protected traits.
  • Conduct or assign investigations, ensure procedural fairness, and maintain confidentiality to the extent possible.
  • Inform parties of the grievance process, outcomes, and appeal rights.
  • Monitor compliance with required timelines and policy mandates.
  • Implement appropriate remedies and preventive measures to stop and prevent recurrence of misconduct.

Monitoring, Reporting, and Recordkeeping

  • Maintain comprehensive records of all complaints, investigations, hearings, and outcomes in accordance with federal and institutional requirements.
  • Coordinate regular climate assessments and analyze data to identify patterns, risk factors, and areas for improvement, in coordination with Institutional Research.
  • Submit annual and semi-annual reports to the Board of Trustees and Executive Leadership Team summarizing complaints, resolutions, and institutional actions, with all personally identifiable information redacted.
  • Ensure ongoing review and updates to Title IX and VI policies and procedures for compliance with federal and state law.
  • Maintain close coordination with the Clery Act Compliance Officer and other relevant staff on overlapping reporting, prevention, and education obligations.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to external agencies (e.g., OCR) on matters related to Titles IX and VI.

Communication and Outreach

  • Maintain updated nondiscrimination information and resources on the College website and catalog.
  • Ensure that public postings, campus communications, and social media content align with institutional policies prohibiting threats, discrimination, harassment, or hate speech.
  • Participate in twice-annual briefings with student leaders regarding policy implementation and compliance updates.

II. Student Conduct Responsibilities

  • Receive and address complaints alleging violations of the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Provide regular training to students, faculty, and staff on rights, responsibilities, and reporting mechanisms.
  • Maintain online and print resources related to student conduct.
  • Collaborate with Residence Hall and Student Life On-Call staff regarding emergency procedures, incident reporting, and case follow-up.
  • Implement both short and long-term remedies and policies to reasonably stop misconduct and prevent its recurrence.
III. Student Affairs and Campus Engagement

  • Partner with Student Affairs to design and implement programs that enhance leadership development, community building, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Maintain strong visibility across campus and develop relationships with students, faculty, and staff to promote a positive campus climate.
  • Serve as a liaison between students and the administration to address concerns and facilitate access to campus resources.
  • Contribute to the strategic planning and assessment of Student Affairs programs and initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.

SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate in a highly professional, positive, and friendly manner in a fast-paced, student-centered environment. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with strong listening and interpersonal abilities.
  • Proven experience working collaboratively and respectfully with a diverse community of students, faculty, staff, and the public. Demonstrated commitment to principles of holistic student wellbeing and intersectional justice.
  • Enjoys working directly with students and serving as a conduit for support and problem-solving. Demonstrated commitment to holistic student wellbeing and creating an environment of belonging and care.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion. Strong judgment, initiative, and analytical skills to assess complex situations and make informed, fair decisions.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy and attention to detail under pressure.
  • Expertise in developing and delivering effective training for students, faculty, and staff on compliance, conduct, and inclusion topics. Ability to communicate complex regulations and policies in accessible, engaging ways.
  • Proficiency with databases, spreadsheets, email, electronic calendar management, and other administrative and data management technologies.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Willingness to work occasional evening and weekend hours to support programs and student needs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • A master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Organizational Leadership, Counseling, Student Personnel, or a related field is required.
  • A minimum of three to five years of progressively responsible experience in student affairs, including leadership or supervisory responsibility, is required.
  • At least two years of full-time experience in Title IX coordination—serving as a Title IX Coordinator, Deputy/Assistant/Associate Coordinator, or Investigator—with direct experience conducting investigations is required.
  • Prior experience in a specialized or highly competitive college or university setting, particularly within an urban environment, is highly desirable.
  • An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered in meeting the minimum qualifications.

Salary range: $115,000 - $130,000 per year
