Organizational Overview
The Korean American Family Service Center, Inc. (KAFSC) is a leading nonprofit organization serving women, children, and families in the New York tri-state area to prevent and end domestic violence, sexual assault, and relationship abuse. Through counseling, education, advocacy, shelter, legal services, economic empowerment, youth programming, and community-based support, KAFSC helps individuals and families build safe and healthy lives based on dignity, respect, and self-determination. All services are culturally responsive, linguistically appropriate, trauma-informed, and free.
Position Summary
The Director of Operations is a senior member of KAFSC’s leadership team and a key strategic thought partner to the Executive Director. This position provides high-level leadership and oversight of the organization’s internal infrastructure, including human resources, talent management, organizational compliance, finance, government contracts, office operations, systems, and administrative functions. The Director of Operations ensures that KAFSC’s internal systems are strong, compliant, efficient, and aligned with the organization’s mission, values, and long-term strategic goals. This position works closely with the Executive Director, senior leadership, program directors, finance and operations staff, consultants, vendors, auditors, government agencies to strengthen organizational sustainability and support effective program delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Organizational Strategy and Leadership
- Serve as a senior strategic partner to the Executive Director in strengthening KAFSC’s organizational infrastructure, operational systems, financial sustainability, and internal management practices.
- Lead cross-departmental planning and coordination to ensure that finance, HR, compliance, contracts, and operations are aligned with programmatic needs and organizational priorities.
- Support the implementation of KAFSC’s strategic goals by developing systems, policies, workflows, and internal structures that promote accountability, efficiency, and sustainability.
- Provide leadership in organizational risk management, internal controls, and operational decision-making.
- Work with the Executive Director and senior leadership team to assess organizational capacity, staffing needs, and infrastructure priorities.
Human Resources and Talent Management
- Provide senior leadership over KAFSC’s human resources functions, including recruitment, hiring, onboarding, performance management, benefits administration, staff development, employee relations, and offboarding.
- Oversee the employee lifecycle and ensure consistent, equitable, and compliant HR practices across the organization.
- Strengthen talent management systems, including performance evaluation processes, supervisory structures, professional development plans, and retention strategies.
- Partner with the Executive Director and supervisors to assess staffing needs, support hiring plans, and promote effective team structures.
- Oversee HR platforms, payroll coordination, benefits administration, personnel files, and employment documentation.
- Research and recommend improvements to employee benefits, compensation practices, workplace policies, and staff support systems.
- Ensure compliance with applicable employment laws, labor regulations, organizational policies, and funder requirements.
- Work with employment and labor counsel, consultants, and PEO or HR vendors as needed to update staff manuals, policies, procedures, and HR practices.
- Promote a workplace culture rooted in respect, accountability, transparency, collaboration, and mission alignment.
Organizational Compliance and Risk Management
- Oversee organizational compliance with grant regulations, government contract requirements, employment laws, nonprofit regulations, and internal policies.
- Maintain and strengthen policies, procedures, manuals, and internal systems to support organizational accountability and compliance.
- Monitor changes in city, state, federal, and nonprofit regulatory requirements and recommend necessary updates to policies or practices.
- Coordinate compliance-related documentation, reporting, recordkeeping, and internal reviews.
- Work with relevant staff to identify operational, financial, HR, contract, and compliance risks and develop corrective action plans as needed.
- Support the organization’s readiness for audits, monitoring visits, contract reviews, and funder assessments.
Operations, Systems, and Administration
- Oversee day-to-day organizational operations, including office management, facilities, technology, administrative systems, vendor management, insurance, and internal workflows.
- Ensure that KAFSC’s physical and virtual work environments are safe, functional, secure, and supportive of staff and client service needs.
- Oversee IT services, data platforms, HR systems, finance systems, and other operational tools to ensure effective use and alignment with organizational goals.
- Oversee KAFSC’s IT systems, technology infrastructure, and digital platforms to ensure secure, efficient, and reliable operations across the organization.
- Manage relationships with external IT consultants, vendors, and service providers to support day-to-day technology needs, cybersecurity, troubleshooting, equipment management, and system upgrades.
- Ensure that staff have access to appropriate hardware, software, email accounts, shared drives, communication tools, and other technology resources needed to perform their roles effectively.
- Oversee technology onboarding and offboarding processes, including user account creation, access permissions, device assignments, password protocols, and removal of access upon separation.
- Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency, technology infrastructure, internal communications, and cross-departmental coordination.
- Manage vendor relationships, consultant agreements, service contracts, and administrative systems.
- Support facilities planning and space management to meet the evolving needs of staff, programs, and organizational growth.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in nonprofit management, business administration, public administration, human resources, finance, accounting, organizational development, or a related field strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years of progressive leadership experience in nonprofit operations, finance, human resources, compliance, government contracts, or organizational management.
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years of supervisory experience, preferably managing finance, HR, operations, administrative, or cross-functional teams.
- Demonstrated experience with nonprofit internal controls, and grant or contract compliance.
- Experience managing government contracts, foundation grants, procurement processes, funder reporting, and compliance requirements.
- Strong knowledge of human resources practices, employment compliance, benefits administration, performance management, and talent development.
- Experience working with senior leadership and Boards of Directors preferred.
- Experience in a mission-driven, community-based, culturally specific, or direct service nonprofit organization strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of nonprofit operations, HR, compliance, and organizational management.
- Ability to think strategically while also managing complex operational details. ● Excellent judgment, discretion, and ability to handle sensitive personnel, financial, and organizational information.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, project management, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with diverse staff, Board members, funders, auditors, consultants, vendors, and community partners.
- Demonstrated ability to build systems, improve workflows, and strengthen organizational infrastructure.
- Experience with HR platforms, payroll systems, accounting software, financial reporting tools, data systems, and Microsoft Office or Google Workspace.
- High level of integrity, accountability, professionalism, and commitment to KAFSC’s mission.
- Commitment to trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and survivor-centered organizational practices.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary: $100,000
