Program Associate

ERASE Racism
Syosset, NY

ERASE Racism is seeking to augment its staff with the addition of a part-time Program Associate in one of two programmatic areas: Inclusive Housing and Education Equity. To achieve that, we are posting job descriptions for both Program Associate positions, even though we are hiring for only one position . We currently have one staff member who is equipped to fill either position.

Applicants will only be considered for hire if they (1) select one of the two positions, (2) email a resume and cover letter to either [email protected] or [email protected] and (3) complete the online application form . See the bottom of this document for detailed instructions.

ERASE Racism is a civil rights organization based on New York’s Long Island that exposes and addresses the devastating impact of historical and ongoing structural racism. We do so through research, policy advocacy, legal action, and educating and mobilizing the public – driving policy change at local, regional and statewide levels and through national coalitions. We have been recognized locally and nationally for our cutting-edge work.

Our two primary program Initiatives are Inclusive Housing (with a focus on coordinating the Long Island Housing Coalition in advocating for inclusive affordable housing) and Education Equity (with a focus on coordinating the high school Youth Development for Leadership Program). With this hire, the president of ERASE Racism seeks to augment our strong but small program team by adding a Program Associate in one of the two areas, who best complements the existing team’s skills, program expertise, and accomplishments.

Please click this link to view a PowerPoint deck describing ERASE Racism and its impacts over its 25-year history, including highlights from each of the two programs.

  1. Education Equity Program Associate - Youth Development for Leadership Program

Position :

This Program Associate will support ERASE Racism’s mission by empowering youth leaders and engaging communities to take collective action on racial equity issues.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Run and improve the existing programs housed under our Youth Development for Leadership Initiative, including the Student Task Force, the Long Island Leaders of Tomorrow Conferences, and the Student Leaders for Equity Summer Internship.

  • Build and maintain an alumni network of program participants.

  • Provide regular reporting on program activities, successes, and areas of needed improvement in accordance with grant reporting requirements, as well as identifying media opportunities.

  • Identify and cultivate partnerships with schools, student organizations, and youth-serving nonprofits.

  • Support youth participation in public forums, advocacy days, and conferences.

  • Advocate for policies and structures that produce education equity for schools and their students.

  1. Inclusive Housing Program Associate - Long Island Housing Coalition

Position :

This Program Associate will lead and strengthen a coalition of diverse Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk) stakeholders to advance policies that promote and facilitate an increase in the amount of inclusive housing. Inclusive housing provides the full range of housing types, including single-family homes, apartments, townhomes, and mixed-use buildings of various sizes; it includes housing that is for rent or purchase, that is accessible to individuals and families of low and moderate incomes, and that is located in a variety of areas in existing communities or as part of new ones. At its core, inclusive housing is affordable to those who need it and must lower structural barriers for people of color and other groups of people that have been historically shut out of housing and continue to face systemic barriers to accessing housing, e.g. people who are members of protected classes under fair housing laws. When housing is built, robust outreach to these groups is needed to ensure that the vision of inclusive housing is realized.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and expand the Long Island Housing Coalition, which seeks to be the trusted convener, educator, and advocate for inclusive housing on Long Island. The Program Associate in this position will embody that spirit and champion the cause.

  • Organize regular meetings, develop public education materials and campaigns, stay up to date on the latest affordable housing policies and developments and engage community members, civic, religious, and government leaders in helping to make the case for inclusive housing.

  • Organize housing summits in communities across Long Island to meaningfully connect with, learn from, and educate community members, providing a forum for discussing and strategizing about advancing affordable housing.

  • Serve as a spokesperson for the coalition and maintain robust written and oral communication with the coalition and the wider public, using presentations, newsletters, and social media.

  • Utilizing ERASE Racism’s Affordable and Inclusive Housing Tool and other resources, host meetings with policymakers (at all levels of government) and nonprofit and for-profit developers to identify localities ripe for affordable housing development.

  • Meet with housing counseling programs to understand the obstacles their clients are facing and advocate for engagement around local, regional, and state policy advocacy.

  • Build relationships with individuals and groups to advance inclusive housing.

Nonprofit Career Paths

If you are looking for career paths in the Nonprofit arena, both positions offer exposure to aspects of policy & legislative advocacy, community engagement/organizing, communications, fundraising & development, and leadership & operations.

Requirements for both positions

The salary is $35-$40 per hour, depending on experience level, for approximately 20-28 hours per week, with some shorter weeks and some longer ones depending on the work demands.

Both positions can be hybrid, but they require some in-office work (at ERASE Racism’s office at 6800 Jericho Turnpike, Syosset, NY) during customary weekday working hours. There are also periodic evening and weekend commitments for events and constituent meetings. There is some flexibility when some work tasks are completed within these parameters. Remember to identify any work scheduling constraints in your cover letter. The ideal candidate already lives in Nassau or Suffolk County and is familiar with this region.

You must have a valid driver’s license and an insured car in good working order to commute to work (public transportation is not readily available) and attend meetings anywhere in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. You will be reimbursed for travel to outside meetings and events (but not travel to and from the office). You will not be reimbursed for routine taxi and uber-type travel.

You accrue sick time as per New York State law. There are very limited optional benefits for a fee (no organizational health insurance).

How to Apply

Click here to view the online application form , which must be completed in addition to emailing your resume and cover letter to either [email protected] or

[email protected]

Please ensure that your resume and cover letter are titled in the following formats: LAST NAME, FIRST NAME, and indicate the position you are applying for.
