Job Overview:

St. Bernard’s School is a K-9 independent boys’ school founded in 1904. The school, located on the Upper East Side, serves a diverse community of approximately 385 students and 100 employees.

Under the direction of the Director of Facilities, the Cleaner position is a 12-month, full-time role responsible for daily cleaning and maintenance of the building.

Responsibilities:

• Perform cleaning duties in a variety of areas, as assigned by the Director of Facilities

• Assist kitchen staff during peak lunch hours, ensuring the cafeteria is clean

• Be willing to respond to emergencies or other duties outside of the normal scope of work

• Ensure the assigned area is clean, ready, and safe for school to open as scheduled

• Ensure the garbage area is cleaned at all times and assist in removing garbage from the building for pick up

• Perform building checks during the days that the school is closed, including weekends, based on a rotating schedule given by the Director of Facilities

• Report any unusual or unsafe conditions to the Director of Facilities

• Remove snow and ice from the sidewalk using shovels and ice melt

• Be willing and able to assist after hours or off hours for school-wide events for set-up and breakdown

• Deliver boxes and packages to assigned locations

• Be willing to pitch in where needed, including helping with coverage needs that might arise

• Other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities

Physical Activities/Qualifications:

• Must be able to ascend and descend ladders, scaffolds, and stairs

• Must be able to work in high and low temperatures for extended periods of time

• Must be able to work in noisy or small environments

• Must be able to turn, twist, crawl, or maneuver into different positions to satisfy certain job requirements

• Operate all equipment in a safe manner

• Able to work well alone or with others in a team environment, ensuring work is completed in a timely manner

• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs with or without assistance

• Display a pleasant and professional attitude at all times

• Must possess a high degree of integrity
