Listing descriptionThe Patrol Sergeant is responsible for providing first line supervision of all patrol, dispatch and reporting functions on an assigned tour, with the goal of ensuring a safe and secure environment for College personnel, students, visitors, property and assets. When designated as such, the Sergeant may also act as a commanding agent.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
»Hold Roll-Call briefings and at the commencement of each tour, inspect all members under their supervision to ascertain that they are present and/or accounted for, fit for their tour of duty and are properly uniformed and equipped to execute their respective tasks, in conformity with current directives.Inspect assigned personnel all over the duration of each shift.
»Accounts for all equipment, including keys at the beginning and the end of each shift, as required.
»Prepare a everyday written report of all pertinent activities occurring during the shift.
»Review and sign all everyday written shift reports and/or incident reports of assigned staff for accuracy and validation.
»Train, direct, supervise and evaluate subordinates in assigned tasks. Recommend remedial or corrective action for performance deficiencies noted.
»Assume command of the Department, shift, unit or situation as per current directives, in the absence of higher ranking agents.Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assigning shifts and other related administrative functions.
»Keep superior agent apprised and informed of routine operations, emergency situations and performance records of assigned staff.
»Patrol all facilities, office buildings, grounds and parking lots as assigned.
»Provide access for staff and students into buildings and rooms; perform security escorts and transports.
»Respond to medical emergencies and fire alarms and notify/coordinates efforts of emergency. personnel (AFD, APD, National Grid etc.), as required.
»Observe, investigates and report on all incidents and crimes reported on campus, circumstances involving city police or fire department, and locations that require repairs or are in a hazardous condition.
»Assume a leadership abilities function in managing, maintaining and ensuring compliance of one or more of the following departmental program management responsibilities:NYS Education Law Article 129, Student Right-to-Know Act (Clery Act), the Department's technology systems, and the Department's Training Records and Scheduling.
»Make warrantless arrests upon the determination of reasonable cause that a criminal offense has been committed on campus grounds.
»Utilize physical force upon determination that it is necessary to affect an arrest, prevent an escape from custody of a suspect, and/or in circumstances of self defense.
»Carry and utilize defensive weapons (as delineated in NY Education Article 129-A and as allowed by Departmental policy) for avoidance of crime or enforcement of law and order.
»Issue a variety of appearance tickets and/or summons' to offenders (as delineated in NY Education Article 129-A).
»Possess, on a temporary basis, stolen property secured in the investigation of a criminal activity (as delineated in NY Education Article 129-A).Account for all monies, properties or valuables received. Process and disburse same in conformity with current directives.
»Serve as liaison between students and security personnel regarding customer service matters such as the purchasing of parking permits, issuing temporary parking permits, violation appeals, ID cards, and card access.
»Assist Dispatch in answering the phones and radios in a pleasant professional manner and taking and forwarding accurate messages.
»Manage Parking Permits, Ticket Violations, Student Holds Information, Key Access, and Vehicle Mileage and Maintenance databases.
»Organize and track pending items.
General Requirements:
»Completed the New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services Campus Public Safety agents Course or have current Police agent status that meets New York State's Division of Criminal Justice Services requirements.
»Must complete the NYS Public Safety manager's course and pass the connected exam within 12 months of appointment to the position.
»Three years' practice in campus public safety, police, military or related field preferred
»Associate degree preferred.
»NYS Security Guard registration required.
»Basic CPR and First Aid Certified (will train if necessary).
»A valid NYS driver's license and DMV report which meets the criteria noted below*
»Strong interpersonal and leadership abilities expertise.
»Must be physically fit and be able to climb stairs, walk or sit for extended periods of time.
» managery practice preferred.
*No DWI, DWAI, DWAI Drug convictions in the last five (5) years
*No moving violation conviction within the last five (5) years, where speed is twenty (20) miles per hour or more above the posted speed limit
*No reckless driving or vehicular assault convictions in the last five (5) years
*No more than two (2) moving violation convictions within the last forty (40) months; or
*No more than two (2) accidents or no more than one (1) accident and one (1) moving violation within the last forty (40) months

Pay rate: $19.80 per hour
