Objective of Role: Hospital Responders are members of our community and hospital-based gun violence prevention program that aims to reduce and prevent shootings through the use of public health strategies. Hospital Responders provide immediate crisis support to families victims of violence. The ideal candidates will assist the family with practical needs, safety planning, and work to engage family members with services provided by GOSO programs, as well as other program components. They provide conflict mediation, referral, and follow-up services to victims of violence. This work is a collaboration between a community-based Cure Violence program and a partner hospital. (Harlem Hospital – 501 Lenox Avenue NY 10037). Requires evening, late night, weekend and holiday hours.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Respond to shooting and other cases of severe violence, to prevent retaliation, when notified by hospital staff
  • Learn about the shooting or violence incident in order to assist in mediating situations and preventing retaliation between individuals and groups
  • Performs de-escalations, as needed and works to intervene in circumstances in which retaliation is likely.
  • Work to intervene Formulate action plans to help resolve conflicts with the program team
  • Gain information on potential conflicts affecting East Harlem/Central Harlem neighborhoods
  • Form relationships with the highest risk people in the community, as well as the people who know them
  • Report to the Hospital Responder Supervisor and keep him/her informed of all hospital notifications and communications
  • Keep a daily log documenting all contacts with hospital staff, patients, and their family and friends
  • Attend all program trainings
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and other team meetings as required
  • Attend regular implementation meetings with hospital staff

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with high-risk youth and gang members
  • Experience or training in crisis intervention
  • Knowledge of neighborhoods, street sets, crews, gangs and or group
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes late evenings, weekends and holidays

Among the major programs that are under the GOSO umbrella are Stand Against Violence East Harlem (SAVE), GOSOWorks, and multiple education programs (including Pathways-to-Graduation, a high school equivalency program). GOSO served its participants and the Harlem community throughout the Pandemic and, in fact, expanded its budget in the past few years. We are currently building our external relations functions, including development, in order to position GOSO for continued growth and expanded impact on those at the heart of our mission.
