Job Summary
The Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences (E&ES) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY invites applications for one open rank, and one adjunct level tenure-track/tenured position, both in Earth Systems Science. Research areas in the E&ES Department currently include experimental, analytical, and environmental geochemistry, petrology of Earth's systems, biogeochemistry, astrobiology, geomicrobiology, and modern and ancient climate change. We are pursuing candidates whose research will complement and grow these strengths, and whose research programs address fundamental problems in Earth Systems science, including, but not limited to:
1. Natural systems and environmental geochemistry, global change, critical zone science, soil science, environmental mineralogy.
2. Early Earth environments, fluid-rock interactions, planetary evolution and tectonics, experimental geochemistry, and geochemical proxies for interpreting ancient environments.
Any candidate with a computational approach in the above research areas is also encouraged to apply. The prosperous candidates will have tasks that include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences, engaging in the Geology and Environmental Sciences undergraduate degree programs, developing and maintaining robust programs of research and scholarship, and providing service to the department, the School of Science, and to Rensselaer.
The E&ES department maintains cross disciplinary collaborations with several of Rensselaer's research initiatives, including the Center for Environmental reliable Isotope Analysis (CESIA), the Future of Computing Institute (FOCI; ), and the Darrin Fresh Water Institute (DFWI) at Lake George ().
Of the two prosperous candidates, one is expected to develop an astrobiology significant research program that compliments the continuing scientific objectives of the Rensselaer Astrobiology Research and Education Center (RARE) (). Additionally,
The prosperous candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in our curriculum, develop and maintain a robust program of externally sponsored research, and participate in service activities of the Department, School of Science, and Rensselaer.


Minimum expertise, expertise, and Abilities
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in a directly related field (or foreign degree equivalent) and they must demonstrate a record of excellence in research and scholarship, evidence or the promise of future distinction in high quality educational activities including teaching and advising, and a proven commitment to professional service.


Starting income/Rate

Expected hiring range:

» adjunct Professor: $105,000 - $110,000

»Associate Professor: $115,000 - $130,000

»Professor: $140,000 - $160,000

Pay transparency disclosure: The selected candidate's income will be determined located on factors that include the available budget, internal equity, and the final candidate's qualifications, practice, education and other job-related credentials. This hiring range is provided as Rensselaer's good faith estimate of the expected hiring range at the time of posting.
