Middle and Highschool Biology/Earth Science Teacher

Job Overview

Hunter College High School is anticipating a vacancy for next year for a 7th and 9th grade science teacher for the 2026-7 school year. Our 7 grade curriculum is an integrative Earth and Life Sciences curriculum which dives into earth processes and environmental ecology, along with a strong focus on the diversity of life and evolution. Our 9 grade biology curriculum starts with cell/molecular bio, then dives deeply into human anatomy and physiology in the second semester. We are governed by the City University of New York (CUNY), not the New York City Department of Education, and serve gifted students from all 5 boroughs. We offer a rigorous, non-Regents science curriculum that includes weekly lab sessions for all grades. We follow the NYCPS salary schedule, but this is a substitute position and is capped at the 4A salary step.

Our ideal candidate would have full-time experience teaching biology in high school, with some experience in earth/environmental science and/or middle school. Candidates should be proficient at creating and adapting lesson plans to each grade level they teach. New York State certification is preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

- Teaching course content to gifted students in a challenging, yet age-appropriate manner

- Running weekly lab sessions and evaluating student performance

- Working collaboratively with other faculty to develop, evaluate, and revise curriculum

- Mentoring middle school students in year-long science fair projects

Required Education

Bachelor’s degree in the sciences with upper-level coursework in related fields and graduate coursework in the sciences or science education. A transcript review is required.
