Position Summary: The New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) Office of Food and Nutrition Services (OFNS) is dedicated to providing NYC’s students with access to healthy food choices with the highest nutritional standards. OFNS has a critical impact on the overall education of students as we serve meals daily throughout the 5 boroughs of New York City. With over 8,000 employees and an approximately $600 million budget, the organization has a significant influence on the national school food industry and the eating habits of future generations.
In addition to day-to-day operations, OFNS is working on several initiatives that will add overall value to work performed and support high-level Chancellor and Mayoral initiatives.
The Outreach Associate, Special Programs will perform functions related to programmatic advancement and organize data and communications with a high degree of efficiency and customer service, assisting in the implementation of community development programs within the OFNS. The selected candidate will monitor and evaluate various initiatives that support not only the NYCPS, but NYC at large. Performs related work.

Key Relationships: Relationships will be fostered with the OFNS staff, and with interested stakeholders regarding Mayoral Initiatives in the NYCPS and in other NYC agencies.
Responsibilities
- Plans, implements, monitors, and evaluates programs providing important community services through the OFNS; works collaboratively within the agency and other City agencies to secure the best outcomes for NYCPS students.
- Works in collaboration with the Outreach Specialist within the unit to provide meals and related food service functions and communication to charter and non-public schools throughout the school year. This includes but is not limited to managing relationships with units within the organization and other communications between city agencies.
- Performs work in the preparation of planning documents required for funding of mayoral initiatives and accountability of non-public and charter school feeding.
- Supports functions among community organizations leading toward successful rollouts of community-based programs to benefit NYC residents at large regarding food accessibility.
- Assists in the creation of tools for the evaluation of programs; reviews program plans and tweaks evaluations as necessary; assesses current processes and supports new systems to streamline workflow.
- Works cross-functionally on a routine basis to provide for the best outcomes regarding community and organizational needs.
- Develops and maintains surveys to assess existing programs and plans related to public food services and other factors of community and organizational importance.
- Assists with the rollout of major changes to school food services, including various Mayoral initiatives.
- Provides technical assistance and training to staff in techniques in non-public and charter school food service program implementation and management.
- Collaborates with Community Based Organizations, OFNS staff and management regarding OFNS initiatives to ensure successful outcomes.
Qualification Requirements:
Minimum
- High school graduation or equivalent and three years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to duties described above; or
- Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" above.
Preferred
- Excellent written, spoken and presentation skills.
- Food services experience.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills related to community outreach.
Salary :
$44,432 (New Hire Rate)
$51,094 - $73,941 (Incumbent - 2 years of full-time continuous City service)
(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
