Whitney Signs Host (Freelance Contractor)

The Whitney Museum Access Programs team seeks D/deaf candidates for the role of Whitney Signs Hosts. Hosts provide support in ASL to attendees of the Whitney Signs program.

Whitney Signs tours enable visitors to experience the Whitney’s world-renowned collection of modern and contemporary American art in American Sign Language (ASL). On Whitney Signs tours, a Deaf educator leads a gallery tour in ASL. Whitney Signs takes place each month and are always accompanied by a free wine and cheese reception. Hosts support all aspects of the program.

ASL interpretation is not provided for program attendees but will be present to assist with communication with Whitney Education staff.

Whitney Signs is organized by the Whitney’s Access Programs and Initiatives team.

Responsibilities
  • Stand in the lobby to direct Whitney Signs registrants to the correct place
  • Assist with program registration issues/questions
  • Help with setting up food and refreshments for wine and cheese reception
  • Accompany tour to the galleries and assist educator with crowd management and conversation facilitation
  • Make sure all attendees leave the building by 6pm
  • Assist Whitney Access team with clean up and storing leftover food
  • Collaborate with other Whitney Signs Hosts to divide responsibilities
  • Attend quarterly Whitney Signs team meetings and trainings
Education Background
A BA or BFA is preferred, but not required

Requirements
  • Must identify as D/deaf and communicate in ASL
  • Customer service skills preferred
  • Computer literacy is a plus
Pay Structure
This is a freelance contractor role that pays $50 per hour for Whitney Signs days , and $30 per hour for meetings .
This is a contractor role; invoices must be submitted for payment within 30 days of last shift
Whitney Signs primarily happens on the first Saturday of every month (besides holiday weekends)
From 3 – 6pm.
Whitney Signs Hosts are required to be present from 2:30 – 6:30pm to support the program; Hosts must be available to work at least six Whitney Signs sessions per year.
