Job Description:

Budget Title: Postdoctoral Associate (SL-1)

Salary: $80,000 (full-time, temporary)

The Department of Social Work at Binghamton University, State University of New York (SUNY), invites applications for a two-year Postdoctoral Fellow through SUNY's Promoting Recruitment, Opportunity, Diversity, Inclusion and Growth plus (PRODiG+) program with a focus on practice and/or policy to begin in Fall 2026. The fellowship could lead to a tenure-line appointment.

The PRODiG+ Fellowship is designed with two primary goals: (1) increase the number and share of excellent and diverse faculty committed to advancing the ideals of diversity, equity, and inclusion; and (2) strengthening the pathway for retention and support of these candidates. More information about the fellowship is available at .

Binghamton University is consistently ranked among the top public universities in the nation with more than 130 broadly interdisciplinary educational programs led by researchers respected around the world. Binghamton merges rigorous academics, distinguished faculty and state-of-the-art facilities to engage and challenge its 18,000+ students. The high-achieving Binghamton student body also draws on New York State's considerable diversity and includes students with a wide range of life experiences including first-generation college students to international students. Beyond their talent, these students share a desire to shape the future through technology, insight, intellectual exploration and community service.

The successful fellow will join a dynamic, creative team of cutting-edge scholars and educators, who are committed to preparing students for multi-level social work practice grounded in social justice principles. Our program currently offers both an MSW (a long-standing brick and mortar program and a new exclusively online program) and growing BSW program. The ideal candidate will be able to teach courses in our MSW online program in both generalist and advanced generalist social work. The teaching load for fellows is 2 courses in the fall and 1 course in the spring. Ideal candidates for this position are invested in fostering inclusive, equitable environments for teaching and learning and have experience teaching online. All successful candidates must have a clear research trajectory focused on social work practice or policy.

The Department of Social Work is part of Binghamton University's College of Community and Public Affairs (CCPA). CCPA is composed of five departments: Human Development, Public Administration, Social Work, Student Affairs Administration, and Teaching, Learning, and Educational Leadership, as well as an interdisciplinary doctoral program in Community Research and Action, all of which prepare students for community-building professions. CCPA is in the heart of the city of Binghamton, in close proximity to local agencies with which faculty frequently partner.

The Fellowship begins at the start of the 2026 Fall semester.

Requirements:

  • Doctoral degree or anticipation of having doctoral degree conferred by July 1st, 2026, in social work or related discipline
  • Have an MSW degree
  • Demonstrate personal, academic, and/or work experience engaging with diversity, equity, and inclusion and/or a commitment to facilitating and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the campus community. Such experience may include, but is not limited to, an academic/scholarly track record focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion; work, volunteer/unpaid/community service; or related experience/expertise in serving underserved or vulnerable areas and/or populations.
  • All areas of research will be considered; however, we are particularly interested in those whose research focuses on areas that address disenfranchised populations and/or communities.
  • Be eligible to work in the United States without a visa sponsorship

Preferred:

  • Experience teaching and/or developing asynchronous courses online
  • Two years of post-MSW, full-time social work experience
  • Scholarly research and teaching incorporating a social justice perspective.
  • Knowledge of or experience with anti-oppressive practices

Preference will be given to candidates who:

  • Are current SUNY doctoral students, alumni, and/or Fellows
  • Are from a low-income background (e.g., Pell-eligible as undergraduates), were first-generation college students (students whose parents have not earned a bachelor's degree), have overcome adversity, are AmeriCorps alumni, or are veterans

Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. If you currently need sponsorship or will need it in the future to maintain employment authorization, you do not meet eligibility requirements. Additionally, please note that Binghamton University is not an E-Verify employer.

The PRODiG+ Postdoctoral Fellowship is open to any and all qualified prospective candidates regardless of race, color, national origin, or sex, religion, and disability challenges, and is consistent with all current governing state and federal nondiscrimination law. All application submissions will be assessed and evaluated in accordance with the required eligibility criteria.
