About AECI 1 Middle School
AECI 1 Middle School is a new charter school that opened in September 2025 with its inaugural 6th grade cohort. Our middle school is an expansion of our high school, AECI 1 Charter High School, which has a graduation rate of over 95% year over year. AECI Middle School is dedicated to fostering a community of academic excellence, innovation, and personal growth. Our mission is to provide a supportive and challenging learning environment that prepares students to explore the skills, knowledge, and practical experiences leading to college and a career focused in the architecture, engineering and construction industries.
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Middle School Art Teacher to join our founding faculty and play a key role in shaping the academic and cultural foundation of our new middle school. This is an exciting opportunity for an educator who is eager to inspire creativity, artistic expression, and foundational visual arts skills in our inaugural 6th-grade cohort.
Our school embraces a theme centered around the architecture, engineering, and construction industries at the high school level, and we are looking for an art teacher who can introduce students to the foundational skills necessary for success in these fields. The ideal candidate will be skilled in teaching drawing, design principles, and spatial thinking while fostering an appreciation for artistic techniques and creative problem-solving.
This educator will be committed to fostering both academic and social-emotional growth, utilizing student work and performance data to inform instruction and continuously enhance learning outcomes. Additionally, they will integrate interdisciplinary connections, providing students with hands-on, engaging experiences that encourage artistic exploration and critical thinking. This role offers the unique opportunity to shape a dynamic, skill-building art program that supports the broader vision of our school’s specialized theme.
The AECI 1 Middle School Art/Drawing Teacher is expected to fulfill the following responsibilities:
Responsibilities
- Develop and Implement Art Curriculum: Design and deliver a rigorous, engaging middle school art curriculum that builds foundational skills in drawing, design, and visual expression.
- Introduce Industry-Relevant Concepts: Teach artistic techniques that connect to our school’s theme of architecture, engineering, and construction , preparing students with foundational skills applicable to these industries.
- Foster Creativity and Critical Thinking: Encourage students to explore artistic expression, problem-solving, and design thinking through a variety of artistic mediums and projects.
- Provide Hands-On Learning Experiences: Incorporate project-based learning, real-world applications, and interdisciplinary connections to enhance student engagement.
- Organize Educational Trips: Plan and lead field trips to museums, galleries, architectural firms, and design studios in New York City to expose students to real-world applications of art, design, and architecture.
- Establish Community Partnerships: Build relationships with local artists, architects, engineers, and cultural institutions to provide students with mentorship opportunities, workshops, and authentic industry exposure.
- Differentiate Instruction: Adapt lessons and teaching strategies to accommodate diverse learning needs, ensuring all students have access to high-quality arts education.
- Use Student Work and Data to Drive Instruction: Assess student progress through formative and summative assessments, providing feedback that supports skill development and growth.
- Create an Inclusive and Supportive Classroom Environment: Foster a positive, culturally responsive, and student-centered learning space where all students feel valued and encouraged to express themselves artistically.
- Collaborate with Colleagues: Work with fellow educators to integrate art with core subjects and support interdisciplinary projects that align with our school’s theme.
- Manage Classroom and Materials: Maintain an organized and resourceful art studio, ensuring students have access to necessary materials while promoting responsible use.
- Engage Families and Community: Showcase student artwork through exhibitions, school events, and partnerships with local organizations to celebrate student achievements.
- Support School Culture and Growth: Contribute to the development of a strong, creative school community by participating in professional development, school-wide initiatives, and extracurricular opportunities related to the arts.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Art Education, Fine Arts, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Valid teaching certification in Art Education or eligibility for certification in [State].
- Experience teaching middle school art, drawing, or design in a school or community setting.
- Strong knowledge of foundational drawing techniques, design principles, and visual arts pedagogy.
- Familiarity with architecture, engineering, and construction concepts or a willingness to integrate them into the art curriculum.
- Experience incorporating project-based learning, interdisciplinary instruction, and hands-on creative exploration into lessons.
- Ability to plan and lead educational field trips to museums, galleries, and industry-related sites in New York City.
- Demonstrated ability to build partnerships with local artists, architects, designers, and cultural institutions to enhance student learning experiences.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive and culturally responsive classroom environment where all students feel valued and encouraged to express themselves artistically.
- Strong classroom management and organizational skills to create a structured, engaging, and supportive learning environment.
- Proficiency in using student performance data to assess progress and tailor instruction to meet diverse learning needs.
- Ability to collaborate with colleagues, families, and community members to support student success and school-wide initiatives.
