Film teaching artist
Position Summary
Depth of Field is seekingTeaching Artists / Filmmaking Mentors to guide a select group of Brooklyn high school students in producing a feature-length expansion of their award-nominated short film, You Alright?
Each Teaching Artist will mentor one student, serving as both Producer/Cinematographer and creative coach—helping transform their ideas into a cohesive, powerful documentary. You’ll work within a small, collaborative team to nurture voice, vision, and technical skill in young filmmakers who are stepping into leadership roles as Directors of their own work.
Responsibilities
- Lead one weekly lesson-based workshop (2 hours) focused on documentary techniques, ethics, and storytelling craft.
- Lead one weekly review session (2 hours) for feedback, editing discussions, and creative problem-solving.
- Mentor one student through pre-production, shooting, and post-production.
- Provide hands-on support in camera operation, sound, and lighting as needed.
- Accompany students between Paul Robeson High School and the Depth of Field office (as chaperone during sessions).
- Collaborate closely with the Executive Producer and peer mentors to ensure consistency in artistic vision and mentorship quality.
Qualifications
- Experience in documentary filmmaking, cinematography, or directing (professional or independent).
- Prior experience teaching or mentoring youth preferred.
- Strong communication, patience, and collaborative spirit.
- A commitment to empowering youth voices and practicing ethical storytelling.
- Ability to create an inclusive, inspiring environment that values experimentation and growth.
Program Details
- Timeline: Mid-December 2025 – May 2026
- Schedule: Two in-person sessions per week (Tuesdays & Thursdays, approx. 4 – 6 PM)
- Location: Depth of Field Office, Soho — Manhattan
- Equipment: Each student will be gifted a Sony camera to use and keep.
- Credits: Students = Directors | Teaching Artists = Producers/Cinematographers
Compensation
Teaching Artists receive a competitive hourly rate, plus lunch and travel reimbursement during sessions.
