Manager
At Book Club Bar, our Manager will be charged with the running of day-to-day BOH and FOH operations, as well as provide backup support for the booktenders on the floor. Owners Nat and Erin will be hands-on with all operations, especially in the first year of running this Brooklyn location, and will be in close contact with the manager at all times.
Essential Operational Duties:
Staff Management
Draft weekly staff schedule
Conduct interviews when needed for new hires
Conduct 6 month and yearly evaluations
Discipline or dismissals as needed
Work closely with ownership
Inventory
Any coffee prep items (hot/cold cups & lids, syrups, napkins, etc)
Weekly inventory of wine, beer, liquor
Milk, alternative milks, sparkling water, OJ
Dishwasher liquids or any other cleaning supplies
Being the first point of contact for any outside vendors, accepting with signature and restocking as required:
Milk and pastries deliveries
UPS/FedEx deliveries
coffee, wine, beer, liquor deliveries
Being the first point of contact for any maintenance workers: plumbers, HVAC, ConEd, building inspectors, NYC Health Department, etc. as needed.
Providing backup support to booktender behind the bar, serving drinks, assisting with book orders, processing transactions in Bookmanager and Toast, and backing up the booktender with any customer issues, when needed.
Assisting with bar prep (garnishes, syrups, etc.)
Garbage/recycling maintenance (breaking down boxes, taking out trash, etc.)
Coordinating with barbacks (when on-duty) to ensure that the bar is fully stocked at all times
Enforcing cleanliness behind the bar and around the store
Maintaining restroom cleanliness, and performing other store and bar housekeeping tasks
Checking out booktenders during shift changeovers
Assisting with onboarding and training any new employees as needed
Any and all other duties assigned by ownership
Essential Bookselling Duties:
Assisting as needed with in-store events:
Liaising with authors, performers, publicists
Assisting with set-up and breakdown of chairs, microphones, etc.
Receiving books
Processing any new books received by our book suppliers through Bookmanager
Processing special orders as they are received
Shipping online or special orders
Reshelving received books
Creating new book release displays weekly
Coordinating with Erin and booksellers on new book displays, faceouts, staff picks, etc.
Facilitating author stock signings as needed
Recovering the bookselling floor during each shift by gathering and restocking items, straightening bookcases
Qualifications and skills:
NYC hospitality required
Strong communication and people skills
Strong organizational and logistical skills
Ability to anticipate needs and be proactive
Ability to multi-task, problem-solve, and adapt as the needs of the store develop or change
Maturity and ability to be self-sufficient
Availability for evenings, weekends, and holidays to align with store needs
Location:
Book Club Bar, Bushwick: 380 Troutman Street (primary)
Book Club Bar, East Village: 197 East 3rd Street (secondary, for training purposes and meetings as needed)
Extra consideration will be given to individuals with previous experience in bookselling and bar hospitality. All applicants should understand that being a manager requires some manual labor: lifting boxes, carrying, and occasionally standing for the entire shift.
Salary: $70,000
