FULL-TIME TEACHING FACULTY SEARCH (OPEN-RANK TEACHING PROFESSOR), ITHACA CAMPUS
The Cornell University Department of Information Science (IS) in the Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science (Bowers) invites applications for full-time, long-term, open-rank Teaching Professor positions at Cornell’s Ithaca campus. Founded with a historical commitment to educating “any person in any study”, Cornell University is located in Ithaca, New York, with a county population of about 100,000 people in the heart of the Finger Lakes region. Our nearly 40 faculty members are leaders in their respective fields within Information Science's interdisciplinary structure, specializing in areas like data science, artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, natural language processing, ubiquitous computing, user-experience design, tech-law policy, and much more. IS is housed in Cornell’s Gates Hall and a new building completed in 2025. The department has strong connections with several other units on campus, including Computer Science, Communication, Economics, Sociology, Science and Technology Studies, Operations Research and Information Engineering, and Cognitive Science. These connections support the IS Department’s mission to advance our understanding of how people and society interact with computing and information.
Teaching faculty hired in these positions will be full-time members of the IS Department; a typical full-time (100%) load for a Teaching Professor in IS is two courses per semester. Based on candidate qualifications and experience, the initial appointment will be either a three-year (Assistant Teaching Professor) or five-year (Associate or Full Teaching Professor) appointment. This is a non-tenured professional teaching track with the potential for growth, the expectation of renewal, and eventual promotion for Teaching Professors. Evaluation is through a combination of student course feedback, peer teaching evaluations, and assessments of course design and impact from experts outside the department.

We are seeking candidates who will contribute to a mix of undergraduate and masters courses in one or more of the wide range of topics covered by IS. Teaching Professors both develop new courses and teach existing courses. Current courses cover web programming and design; application development; human-computer interaction; human-AI interaction; information visualization; data science and artificial intelligence; network science; and information ethics, law, and policy. These courses are taught at both the introductory and advanced level and are offered to smaller (20-50 students) or larger (150+ students) audiences. Candidates with PhDs in Information Science, Computer Science, or related areas are encouraged to apply. Any experience with online or distance learning modes of instruction is valued.
Candidates must hold a PhD or equivalent degree by August 2026 and have demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence. There is a salary range of $58,300-$166,800 for positions like this one at Cornell; this range reflects an aggregate of qualifications and disciplines across Cornell University. Actual salary offers in Bowers will be based on education, experience, discipline, and relevant skills.
