Development Director
Development Director for the Netherland-America Foundation
Founded in 1921 by Franklin D. Roosevelt and others, the Netherland-America Foundation (NAF) mission is to strengthen the bonds between the Netherlands and the United States through initiating and supporting cultural, educational, and business exchange between the two countries. Our programs include our NAF-Fulbright Fellowships for talented Dutch and American young scholars, internship programs (e.g. our successful and growing Dutch2USA internship program), a student loan program and various programs in the arts, business and public policy. The NAF raises funds through special events, corporate and individual memberships, grants, annual fund donations, major gifts, and general donations to support its mission and growing programs.
The NAF is seeking an enthusiastic and strategic Development Director to lead and expand our fundraising efforts. This position will report to the Executive Director and work closely with the Executive Director and members of the Board of Directors to strengthen and grow the organization’s development program. The Development Director will be responsible for planning and managing all fundraising activities, cultivating strong and lasting relationships with donors, sponsors, members, event participants, volunteers, board members, and other key stakeholders. The ideal candidate will be skilled at translating the NAF’s mission and vision into a compelling case for support and will drive both short- and long-term fundraising goals to ensure the organization’s continued growth and impact.
Job Responsibilities:
- Engage and deepen the relationship with supporters to strengthen annual and long-term financial support of the NAF.
- Independently, and with the Executive Director/Chair and Board Members, meet current and prospective donors and sponsors on a continual basis to directly solicit support for the NAF programs and the NAF signature fundraising events.
- Work with the Executive Director/Chair to create and execute a dynamic fundraising strategy with clear goals, presenting a compelling case that resonates with today’s individual and corporate supporters.
- Achieving short and long-term revenue goals, including increased retention and generation of larger gifts.
- Grow major gift and planned gift programs through identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donors and planned giving prospects.
- Create and submit regular reports on revenue and activity.
- Direct the annual fund program, including mailings and annual fundraising drives.
- Work closely with staff, committees, and volunteers.
- Apply best practices in fundraising.
- Oversee creation/updates of publications (i.e. PPT presentations, monthly newsletter articles, webpages, leave-behinds, etc.) to support fund raising activities.
- Maintain gift recognition programs.
- Perform other related duties as requested.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years’ experience in fundraising in the nonprofit sector.
- Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred.
- Proven track record in managing and cultivating relationships with major donors.
- Knowledge and experience in fundraising techniques, particularly event fundraising and major gift fundraising.
- Strong ability to establish and maintain contacts with senior executives at companies and foundations.
- Track record of securing both event sponsorships and major/planned gifts.
- Ability to develop fundraising strategy and translate them into concrete action.
- Embrace the mission of the NAF, be able to articulate a strong case for support and represent the NAF to a variety of constituent groups.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills are required, as is computer proficiency.
- “Self-starter” and goal driven to initiate donor visits and fundraising calls.
- Organized, and exhibit “follow through” on tasks and goals.
- Ability to establish collegial, effective working relationships and partner with staff, board, and volunteers.
- Display a positive attitude, show concern for people and community, demonstrate presence, self-confidence, common sense, and good listening skills.
- Experience in, and affinity for, Dutch-American relations.
- Comfortable operating in a small (4-5 person) office setting.
