Expert software architect

About the Role

CCST is seeking an Expert Software Architect (Mainframe) to provide technical leadership, design direction, and hands-on development support for legacy and modernization initiatives within NYS ITS (OTDA) .
This position focuses on large-scale COBOL development, ClearPath/2200 mainframe systems , and the architectural oversight of mission-critical eligibility and benefit applications.

You’ll guide development standards, ensure code quality and system integrity, and serve as a senior advisor for ongoing modernization and maintenance projects.

What You’ll Do

• Lead analysis, design, coding, testing, and maintenance of all mainframe application components.
• Define technical standards , development methodologies, and design documentation practices.
• Conduct system analysis, program/unit/integration testing , and performance tuning.
• Manage and mentor development staff, coordinating project activities across ITS and OTDA teams.
• Utilize COBOL 74/85 , ECL , TIP , and DMS 2200/RDMS for application development and data management.
• Oversee real-time transaction programming and integrated testing using structured programming techniques.
• Perform ongoing production monitoring , error diagnostics, and system debugging.
• Provide technical expertise during planning, modernization, and conversion phases of mainframe systems.

Must-Have Qualifications

• 84+ months of direct experience with COBOL 74/85 on Client 2200 or ClearPath mainframes , including system analysis, design, testing, and debugging.
• 84+ months of experience utilizing ECL, TIP, and DMS 2200/RDMS .
• 60+ months of experience performing real-time transaction programming using structured programming techniques.
• 60+ months of experience managing development teams and coordinating project activities .
• 60+ months managing application systems development in a mainframe environment .
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.

Important Qualification Notice

This position is specific to mainframe systems .
Candidates must have at least 7 years of hands-on programming experience with COBOL 74/85 on Unisys 2200 or ClearPath mainframe environments .

Experience limited to Java, .NET, Spring Boot, Angular, React, or modern cloud-based development will not meet the required technical qualifications for this role.

Job Type: Contract

Pay: $70.00 - $80.00 per hour
