COMPENSATION:Starting rate is $28.18per hour. You will reach the top rate within 3 years (current top rate for 2025is $40.27) This is a Union environment in association with the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 282. AVAILABLE SHIFT: 2:00 PM to 10:30 PMMonday throughFriday (Saturday and Sunday off). DUTIES RESPONSIBILITIES: Must have basic computer skills to be able to access and complete work orders in AssetWorks as assigned. Must be able to do electric welding and operate oxygen/acetylene cutting torch, and show ability to operate a cutting torch safely. Must be able to perform major bus overhauling, troubleshoot, repair, as well as overhaul mechanical, pneumatic systems, and electrical systems as needed. Must be able to troubleshoot, repair transmissions. Must be able to operate the brake lathe, metal lathe, drill press, and other shop machinery to refurbish brake drums, rotors, shoes, wheel hubs, remove install brake linings, refurbish radius rods, and other rebuildable components as required. Must be able to operate the FSX machine to clean DPFs. May be assigned DPF-PMs as required. Must be able to rebuild EMP alternators as assigned. Must complete all competency evaluations with a qualifying score. Must complete all work assigned in a safe, efficient, and thorough manner. Must have a NYS Heavy Duty Vehicle Inspectors License or meet the requirements of Federal Regulation 49 CFR 396.19, 396.25. Must successfully complete fork trucktraining and show ability to operate a fork truck safely. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration. The employee works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to risks. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. REQUIREMENTS: Minimum of two (2) years of attendance at an accredited diesel mechanics school. May also include completion of a certified course of study in areas such as Auto Repair, Hydraulics, Diesel Engine Repairs, Battery Electric Vehicle Repairs, Electrical Systems Repair, or Welding. OR Equivalent work experience (verifiable by employment records) may be substituted for education, at the rate of two years of work experience for one year of education. Other Requirements: Must have a complete set of tools to perform all jobs assigned. Must obtain a New York State CDL Class Bpermitwith passenger and air brake endorsement prior to start date.Must be able to obtain and maintain a New York State CDL Class B license with passenger and air brake endorsement within 90 days of date of hire. Must possess a New York State CDL Class A permit with towing endorsement for vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating over 26,000 lbs. (can obtain at a later date).Must be able to obtain and maintain a New York State CDL Class A license with towing endorsement for vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating over 26,000 lbs. within 90 days of date of hire. Will be required to pass a post-offer physical. English proficiency is required due to the safety-sensitive nature of this position. To ensure the safety of employees, customers, and the general public, an employee holding this position must be able to read, speak and understand the English language. This proficiency is an essential requirement of this job due to the need to effectively communicate and collaborate with English-speaking co-workers and supervisors regarding work and safety-related matters and tasks. In addition, an employee in this role must be able to read and comprehend materials written in English, such as, but not limited to, specifications, manuals, and other job-related documents.
