EFNEP Bilingual Nutrition Educator

This position will serve as the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) Bilingual Nutrition Educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Nassau County. The EFNEP Nutrition Educator will primarily be responsible for the delivery of established EFNEP public education programming to improve healthy food and lifestyle choices for EFNEP program participants. Program participants will include limited resource parents, care givers with children under the age of 19, young adults, and youth throughout Nassau County. With comprehensive training and supervision, the EFNEP Bilingual Nutrition Educator will be expected to plan and facilitate a series of 6–8-week lessons that focus on general nutrition, food preparation, food safety, and food resource management/ budgeting in various settings throughout the community.


Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Planning and Preparation: plan recruitment events; prepare for events and classes (including grocery shopping and food prep)
  • Teaching: communicate and engage appropriately with culturally diverse audiences while facilitating evidence-based curriculum in person and virtually; think critically and be adaptable to potential challenges that may arise while maintaining focus on achieving educational outcomes
  • Data & Reporting: perform detail-oriented data collection and entry while ensuring confidentiality at all times; submit accurate and timely administrative reports
  • Recruiting and Networking: identify, form, and maintain relationships with community agencies; encourage enrollment through health/resource fairs, group presentations, virtual coalition attendance and regular correspondence, and printed materials
The educator must:

  • Be confident speaking in front of groups and engaging adult and youth participants in class activities,
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills to effectively recruit and retain participants and collaborate with community agencies, and
  • Have excellent time management skills and are self-driven, to successfully work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Participate in on-going in-service education and staff meetings in Nassau County, New York City, Ithaca, and other locations as required
THIS IS A GRANT-FUNDED POSITION. FUNDING FOR THE PROGRAM IS THROUGH THE EXPANDED FOOD AND NUTRITION EDUCATION PROGRAM (EFNEP) AS PART OF THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE (NIFA), AN AGENCY WITHIN THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE (USDA).


Required Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree or equivalent education (GED/High School Diploma and 1 year transferrable program/functional experience).
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License and the ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read and write proficiently) in English and Spanish and/or Haitian-Creole.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends.
  • Ability to present effective educational lessons to target audiences (one-on-one and group) virtually and face to face and work with diverse adult and youth audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a team.
  • Computer skills, including MS office, Outlook, Zoom, data entry software, or willingness and ability to learn.
  • Must have the ability to travel, including overnight (for occasional trainings, paid for by CCE).
  • Reliable and consistent transportation (mileage reimbursed) year-round; while using a private vehicle for official business, the successful candidate must have current automobile liability insurance and possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work in a typical office environment which may include lifting, moving, and/or transporting office supplies, work related materials, and equipment with or without accommodation. Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant food or nutrition knowledge, skills, and/or work experience.
  • Familiarity with the community in which the work will take place.
  • Familiarity with purchasing and preparing foods.
  • Familiarity with reviewing and following recipes and assure compliance to federal and state guidelines.
  • Knowledge and experience working with targeted population (low-income/limited resource families).

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Program Responsibilities:

Program Delivery, Evaluation and Applied Research - 85%

  • Deliver high quality programming to individuals and groups utilizing approved EFNEP curricula and existing EFNEP program materials and resources in face to face and virtual settings.
  • Assist with implementing environmental program initiatives, such as community and school gardens.
  • Assist in team efforts to deliver the EFNEP Program.
  • Utilize existing program materials and educational framework, teach, and graduate the targeted number of adult and youth participants in the Nutrition Program.
  • Implement lesson plans in region with multicultural needs using current and approved curricula and supplemental materials, and tailor appropriate programming based on identified participant needs as applicable.
  • Inform participants of other Extension programs, community agencies, and services.
  • Under the direction of the Supervisor collaborate with community agencies and participate in discussions surrounding program delivery and community connections with community agencies that serve the program audience.
  • Represent CCE before the public, participants, community leaders, government officials, Cornell or other land grant universities in a professional manner as part of program delivery.
  • Implement program evaluation as designed.
  • Assist in the interaction with program participants, advisory committees, Cornell program specialists and faculty, county and community leaders to obtain evaluation data for programs.

Administrative Responsibilities:


Coordination/Operation - 10%

  • Utilize existing program materials to recruit the targeted number of both adult and youth participants in the EFNEP Program.
  • Maintain graduation rate as set by Supervisor.
  • Organize and coordinate EFNEP program activities (i.e. food demonstrations, direct lessons to adults and youth, etc.) to support delivery of established program goals.
  • Submit accurate program related expense receipts and mileage reports in a timely manner.
  • Assist Supervisor in identified administrative aspects of the EFNEP Program including, but not limited to: preparing correspondence, maintaining files, maintaining participant records, etc. ensuring confidentiality of all information.
  • Assist in providing marketing materials in the promotion of EFNEP programming efforts to include, but not limited to: print media, news media, social media, multi-media efforts and the environmental change initiative in collaboration with other nutrition educators.
  • Complete reports accurately, as requested and/or required.
  • Accurately collect and prepare paperwork as required for the program evaluation process.
  • Assist in providing existing information to bring awareness to the public in the form of impact statements, articles for progress/annual reports, etc.
  • Collect enrollment (entry) and exit data for all adult and youth participants.
  • Submit collected data for entry into “WEBneers” tracking program.
  • Recruit participants for EFNEP based on established program criteria.
  • Carry out assignments and as assigned by supervisor, including but not limited to assisting with local health fairs, community activities, etc.
  • Effectively maintain existing professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts.
  • This position may require the transport of program participants and/or program materials and resources in performing position responsibilities.

Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

POSITION DETAILS:

This position is a full-time, non-exempt position, 40 hours per week. The hourly rate for this position is $23.00 - $25.00, commensurate with experience. This position, based on eligibility, offers a comprehensive benefit package, to include: health and dental insurance, NYS retirement, vacation and sick leave.
