Job Summary
The Machinist is responsible for setting up and operating CNC 2-axis lathes, CNC 3-axis mills, and manual machining equipment to manufacture precision components that meet customer specifications. This role requires a strong understanding of machining processes, blueprint interpretation, and quality standards, along with the ability to support continuous improvement initiatives and train less experienced machinists. The Machinist II also contributes to fixture and work-holding design to enhance production efficiency.
Job Description
- Operate CNC and manual metal-cutting equipment, including lathes, mills (vertical and horizontal), and saws across a variety of materials
- Perform machine setups, first article inspections, and execute production based on blueprints, drawings, and work instructions
- Inspect materials and finished components to ensure compliance with quality standards
- Accurately complete production documentation, including inspection records, heat number markings, and hold tags
- Maintain proper inventory movement and reporting within assigned areas, including WIP transactions and material tracking
- Utilize ERP systems (Oracle preferred) to manage work orders, material requirements, and production transactions
- Conduct daily machine maintenance checks
- Follow all safety protocols; report unsafe conditions and stop production when safety or quality concerns arise
- Participate in Lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives
- Operate and set up all CNC 2-axis lathes and 3-axis mills, including mill-turn equipment
- Train, mentor, and support less experienced machinists; document training activities
- Identify and correct variances in machining techniques and ensure adherence to standard work
- Monitor and track shift performance using GEMBA boards; conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions
- Complete and report process-related documentation, including PRs and ECNs
- Perform layered process audits, quality audits, and first-piece inspections
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of manufacturing processes within assigned production cells
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet production and operational goals
Skills Required
- Minimum of 5 years of CNC and/or manual machining experience
- Ability to independently operate select machining equipment and perform basic setups
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and Bills of Materials (BOM)
- Proficiency with measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and thread gauges
- Basic understanding of M-Code and G-Code programming
- Strong math skills, including working with fractions and decimals
- Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and machining equipment
- Basic computer proficiency and ability to navigate manufacturing software systems (including Windchill)
- Effective communication skills, including email communication for reporting risks
- Ability to meet TAKT time and quality standards
- Forklift certification required
- All Level I skills and competencies
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Advanced machining skills, including setup and operation of most equipment
- Ability to edit M-Code and G-Code programs
- Capability to train others and enforce standard work practices
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Working knowledge of Lean manufacturing and continuous improvement principles
- Ability to collaborate across departments to achieve business objectives
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs
- Ability to operate motorized equipment, including forklifts
- Ability to stand for extended periods (up to 4 hours at a time)
- Ability to work extended hours and weekends as needed
- Frequent bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, stretching, squatting, and walking
- Continuous use of speaking, hearing, writing, and measuring skills
Education
- Required: High school diploma or GED
Additional requirements
- Schedule n otes: 1st shift - 5AM - 3:30PM, Monday - Friday, required most Saturdays 6 hours up to 8 hours
- Associate degree in Machining Technology or CNC trade certification preferred
- Experience with ERP systems (Oracle preferred)
Pay rate
- $25 per hour (Compensation is offered based on experience, skills, and market factors)
