Director for Hebrew Sunday School in Kingston, NY- Part-time- $30,000

Congregation Emanuel of the Hudson Valley (CEHV), a Reform synagogue in Ulster County, New York, seeks a Director (20-25 hours a week) of the Zimet Jewish Learning Adventure (JLA), which is our Sunday school. A beacon in the Hudson Valley, the Zimet JLA has a progressive and hands-on curriculum rooted in Hebrew language and Judaics. Bold and creative, the school is looking for an educator with a passion for Jewish learning and a solid grounding in leadership.The Director will oversee the school which serves students ages Pre-K (age 4) through B’Mitzvah and meets once a week on Sunday mornings. The Director will review the current curriculum, determine the needs of the school for the coming year, and implement a curriculum that leads to growth and sustainability of the program. The Director will work closely with a representative of the CEHV Board and a parent-led education committee, as well as with clergy.The role of JLA Director includes but is not limited to:

  • Hiring and managing teachers, interns, and volunteers and ensuring that teachers are appropriately assigned and distributed in classrooms that are a fit with the ages and needs of the students.
  • Attracting and retaining new teachers
  • Attracting new students and families to the JLA and growing school enrollment
  • Working with the Education Committee and CEHV leadership to strategically improve the school to adapt to new challenges and needs
  • Nurturing student engagement and fostering strong Jewish identities by utilizing experiential learning as well as a strong Hebrew curriculum that prepares students and their families for the B’Mitzvah process.

Responsibilities

  • Effectively manage ongoing school operations including new student/staff recruitment and registration, maintenance of student records, procurement of educational materials, school calendar, security guidelines and planning, and programming. Communicate and collaborate with CEHV leadership regarding the use of educational facilities and stewardship over those facilities.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and schedule teachers, classroom aides, and other staff and volunteers.
  • Create a warm and inviting learning environment, emphasizing high expectations related to academic, personal, and Jewish values, as well as bringing positivity and consistency as the leader and “face” of the school.
  • Communicate and work cooperatively with multiple constituencies, including CEHV leadership, Rabbi, Cantor, school staff, families, and community shareholders.
  • Think strategically and creatively about the school including managing the curriculum and adhering to the CEHV mission and vision statements and core values.
  • Be an active and administrative presence during school hours and activities, and coordinate holiday programming including High Holiday children’s programming, Passover, Purim, etc for families in the JLA.
  • Attend relevant Education Committee and Board of Trustees meetings.

Work Remotely: This position offers the opportunity to work remotely during the week, with the understanding that the Director would need to be physically present at CEHV at select times, including when school is in session.

Qualifications

  • B.A./B.S. or higher degree in education and/or Judaic Studies or related fields
  • Experience in educational administration, budgeting, and human resource management. This could be at the Departmental level (eg, Director/Coordinator of Hebrew Education) or at the institutional level (eg, Principal/Administrator)
  • Experience in Jewish education, teaching, and curriculum development
  • Hebrew and Prayer literacy preferred
  • Understanding of the tenants of Reform Judaism
