Schedule: Day Shift, Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 3:30 pm,40 hours per week

Position Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Health Services Coordinator and with guidance from the contracted Nutritionist, and the Cook, the Assistant Cook/Kitchen Aide is responsible for assisting in the up-keep of the kitchen, planning, food preparation, cooking, clean up, and service using standardized nutritious recipes for children.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma
- Completion of a formal education curriculum or training program in food service management.
- A valid Food Handlers Protection Certificate issued by New York City
- Excellent health- ability to stand long hours and lift heavy objects.
- Ability to read, write and understand English/Spanish, with simple arithmetic skills necessary for inventory record keeping.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Knowledge of the basic principles of food service management.
- Knowledge of the operation of all kitchen appliances and equipment.
- Knowledge of proper nutritional portion and temperature control mandated by the NYCDOHMH, and CACFP guidelines.
- In the absence of the Head Cook, assume responsibility for cooking, packaging, and cleaning up in kitchen area.
- Assist in maintaining records of daily food used and food service temperatures.
- Assist in ordering and maintaining the inventory of kitchen supplies and foods with supporting personnel.
- Assists the cook of submitting the CACFP Food Productions.
- Receive and check deliveries against invoices and/or purchase orders. Assist in training and instruction of food service personnel in food preparation, food sanitation & safety and other related duties.
- Assist with food preparation, safe handling and temperature control for participants’ meals.
- Responsible for cleaning the equipment and utensils in work areas, including ovens, worktables, mixing and slicing machines and refrigerators/freezers in the absence of the porter/dishwasher. Also included are dining room, storeroom, and closet areas.
- Assist in delegating tasks to work experience program trainees and volunteers.
- Assist the cook in assuring the proper care and maintenance of all food service equipment; identifies equipment needs for food preparation and service and assists in purchasing as needed.
- Assist teachers with developing food activities for the children in the classroom.
- Cooperate with and participate in nutritional education activities for staff, parents and children.
- Participate in all emergency drills and environmental safety activities.
- Attends and participates in grantee-sponsored training, center pre-service and in-service trainings, and other continuing education, career and professional development opportunities.
- Participate in the agency's self-evaluation process and grantee monitoring visits and comply with any applicable Program Improvement Plans developed.
- Participate in general staff meetings and other meetings, training and events planned by the grantee as requested.
