Community events coordinator of health systems
The Center for Health Equity & Community Wellness (CHECW) seeks to eliminate inequities resulting in premature mortality. With an unwavering grounding in history and structural analysis, CHECW works to increase visibility of the harm perpetuated by socially unjust policy while pushing towards redress for the most impacted NYC communities. CHECW addresses inequity across community and healthcare systems in partnership with community, faith-based, and health care organizations. CHECW's work focuses on social determinants of health, including environmental and commercial determinants, and addresses both upstream and downstream factors to improve health and well-being of New Yorkers. CHECW is comprised of the Bureau of Bronx Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Brooklyn Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Harlem Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention, the Bureau of Health Equity Capacity Building, the Bureau of Equitable Health Systems and the Bureau of Finance, Administration, and Services. The division's Deputy Commissioner also serves as the Agency's Chief Equity Officer and oversee Race to Justice, the Agency's internal reform effort to help our staff learn what they can do to better address health gaps and improve health outcomes for all New Yorkers. The division's Deputy Commissioner also serves as the Agency's Chief Medical Officer. The Bureau of Equitable Health Systems is the healthcare systems bureau of DOHMH situated within the Center for Health Equity & Community Wellness and supporting the strategic plan and vision of the Chief Medical Officer. Our mission is to apply policy, evidence, and practical expertise to improve equity in health care delivery at the individual, organizational, financing and systems levels.
The Office of Health Insurance Services (OHIS) provides community -facing programs and on-the-ground programmatic work that maximize health insurance coverage opportunities and increases access to social support services such as assistance with SNAP applications to address food insecurities for all New Yorkers. The program is seeking to hire a Community Events Coordinator to build partnerships with community stakeholders and develop effective messaging to disseminate to communities and demographics that are at a higher health risk. Duties Will Include But Not Be Limited To- Develop and coordinate a health education training series to expand the Certified Application Counselors knowledge of products and services provided by individual health plans.
- Develop vast knowledge of these products and services and create a list of specialized products and services that cover chronic illnesses (e.g. HIV, diabetes, etc.).
- Bridge healthcare access gaps and develop linkages with Community Board Health Committees to promote health literacy, insurance enrollment and access to affordable healthcare.
- Cultivate relationships with the Program Initiatives Team (PIT) and agency Community Affairs liaisons to enhance the reach and impact of health education, enrollment, access to affordable healthcare and disease prevention efforts.
- Maintain a calendar of scheduled community board Health Committee meetings and ensure immediate supervisor and the agency's Community Affairs borough liaison are informed of planned participation.
- Work collaboratively with PIT to promote health literacy and participate in the creative development process for OHIS Promotional Multimedia Campaigns.
- Administer the program's health insurance enrollment activities and assist clients in applying for other government sponsored programs such as SNAP benefits; SSI or Medicaid, Medicare, and the Medicare Savings Program (MSP) for the aged 65 or older, certified blind and/or disabled. Process referrals received from community residents, community-based partners, internal/external agency programs and special projects for the OHIS program (e.g., Public Engagement Unit, Consumer Contact Center, Early Intervention Program, Neighborhood Health Corps., Asylum Seekers and NYC Care).
- Excellent communication and presentation skills (oral and written)
- Experience working with community groups
- Knowledge of DOHMH Article 28 clinics
- Experience working directly with individuals from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds
- Certified Application Counselor experience a plus
- Certified Health Education Specialist a plus

- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or

- Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
