Duties Description Under the direction of the Director of Private Equity, the Senior Investment Officer will informally oversee the junior investment and operations staff (no formal direct reports) for the Private Equity Team at the New York State Common Retirement Fund ("CRF" or the "Fund"). This position may be based in the Albany or New York City office. - Lead teams responsible for fund investments, continuation vehicles, and co-investments, from sourcing to investment committee presentation, while offering independent recommendations on the merits of investment opportunities. - Supervise the due diligence process of external private equity managers, including leading the evaluation of the manager's investment strategy and process, team composition, portfolio exposures, risk management, and performance.- Lead internal meetings and build quality external commercial relationships with managers and consultants.- Serve as an advisor to the director on portfolio weighting, resource allocation, and new lead generation.- Challenge asset class heads and other fund leaders on their investment ideas and theses. - Mentor and develop junior investment staff on both private equity knowledge and career topics.- Contribute meaningfully to the Investment Advisory Committee presentation development and production process. - Lead, guide, and execute ad hoc and/or special projects as requested by the Director of Private Equity.

Minimum Qualifications Preferred Qualifications/Knowledge, skills, and abilities: - Education: BA in related field (business, finance, economics, or similar quantitative field). MBA, CFA, MS in Finance, or equivalent advanced degree and/or certification preferred. - Experience: At least ten years of buyside or institutional investor experience. - High ethical standards and commitment to the fiduciary responsibilities of a public pension fund.- Deep knowledge of the private equity asset class including performance and valuation metrics, market dynamics and industry trends, and key organizations and practitioners. - Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to construct investment memos, deal presentations, and participate in internal investment strategy meetings as well as external manager meetings.- Ability to independently form judgments on the merits of various investment opportunities and provide high quality recommendations to the Director of Private Equity.- Deep knowledge of institutional private equity portfolio management and the diligence process required to close transactions. - Proficient in use of financial modeling and quantitative analytics to evaluate investment opportunities.- Extensive experience in the review and negotiation of private equity legal documentation and deep practical understanding of key terms and provisions.- Ability to build strong, trust-based relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts, such as consultants, managers, vendors, peer institutions, other departments of OSC.- Strong motivation with the ability to see projects through to completion in a timely manner with limited guidance and a solutions-oriented mindset.- Team player who is energized by a collaborative working environment, within and outside of the asset class.
