The New York Times is looking for a talented, experienced and versatile reporter to join the National desk as it builds a jump squad of journalists whose mission is to own the county's biggest, most captivating stories every day, supercharging the desk's ability to dominate the national conversation.
As part of this team, you will be focused on searching out and responding to breaking news events, wherever they may occur in the country. You should have quick twitch muscles, able to plug in with our regional correspondents and bureau chiefs in seconds and work symbiotically to win readers and beat competitors in the highest leverage moments.
You're able to hit the ground running, cultivating news sources and contacts on the story to land scoops and drive coverage. You should be able to write quickly and precisely, as well as commit to writing in a variety of formats while juggling deadline demands.
You must be as comfortable covering immediate breaking news as you are writing thoughtfully and deeply about events and issues. And above all, you must be collaborative and eager to work with, and learn from, Times colleagues across various desks in the newsroom.
This is an in-office position, based in New York City but may require extensive travel within the United States. This role is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
Responsibilities:

You will deliver stories that help readers better understand the news event, from scoops to explanatory reporting to quick turnaround investigations.

You will have your finger on the pulse of the country, monitoring news and delivering a steady stream of story ideas.

Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence ( and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

You will report to a National Editor.
Basic Qualifications:
-
5+ years' experience at a journalism or media company or other relevant organization
-
Writing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards, including ethical and superb news judgments
-
A portfolio that includes breaking news, enterprise, visual story formats and analysis across a range of subjects.
Preferred Qualifications:

The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$113,270.27 - $140,000 USD
For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. Benefits may include medical, dental and vision benefits, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a company-matching 401(k) plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs.
