POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Suffolk County Community College is the largest community college in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, enrolling more than 26,000 students at its three campuses in Selden, Brentwood, and Riverhead, as well as its Culinary Arts Center in Riverhead. Established in 1959, the college offers a wide array of transfer-oriented associate degrees in the liberal arts and sciences; business; communications and the arts; computing and cybersecurity; health sciences; and many other areas. Career-facing degrees and certificates are offered in allied health professions, automotive technology, culinary and baking, manufacturing, and many other areas. The college provides high school concurrent enrollment opportunities to thousands of students each year through both Suffolk's Beacon program and through on-campus early college classes. Designated by the U.S. Department of Education as a Hispanic Serving Institution, Suffolk enrolls thousands of students in English Language Learning courses, and also serves more service veterans and military-connected students than any other college in the SUNY system.

Suffolk County Community College (SUNY Suffolk) is the largest community college in the State University of New York (SUNY) system and primarily serves an audience of more than 1.5 million residents of Suffolk County. SUNY Suffolk is searching for a full-time, 12-month Professional Assistant (PA) for Surgical Technology beginning Spring 2026, at the Michael J. Grant campus in Brentwood, NY.

This is a Unit III position covered under the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College collective bargaining agreement with the College.

This position responsibilities focus on education, supervision, and evaluation of students in clinical and classroom settings. The PA will collaborate with the Clinical site Managers, the Schedule Coordinators and/or the Educational Coordinators for the Operating Room. SCCC is a comprehensive community college committed to open access, equity, and student success, and candidates for Surgical Technology PA should demonstrate their commitment to these values. Faculty are scheduled to teach based on the needs of students and their department, and may have the option to teach in different course preps in more than one modality.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Arranges for the individual preceptor(s) for each student (if applicable).

  • Monitors each student's progress weekly (while monitoring all rotation sites).

  • Maintain credentials as required by accrediting agencies and regulatory bodies.

  • Assist with classroom instruction, lab practice or clinical rotations (as needed).

  • Assist with evaluating the effectiveness and progression of the clinical experience.

  • Assist with maintaining clinic related documentation according to accreditation / certification requirements.

  • Maintain accurate records with SCCC rotation supervisor at SCCC for each assigned rotation in the program.

  • Acts as a liaison between the college and the clinical sites.

  • Orients students to information and procedures needed for rotation sites students are assigned to.

  • Ensure course and program learning outcomes are accomplished as defined for rotations

  • Assist with submission of college reports in an accurate, timely fashion

  • Able to operate and demonstrate all equipment required to perform the duties of a surgical technologist.

  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport items weighing up to 25 lbs.

  • Coordinates/assist site preceptor(s) to complete evaluations in a timely manner on students' performance during their rotations.

  • Maintains certification and participates in continuing education seminars and in professional development opportunities in order to maintain current state-of-the-art knowledge and skills.

  • Must be able to meet timelines and has strong time management skills.

  • Other assignments as needed by program.

The Professional Assistant for Surgical Technology will travel to multiple clinical sites within the Suffolk and Nassau Counties as well as NYC Metro Area.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An Associate's Degree from a regionally accredited institution.

  • Possession of a current national certificate issued by the Nation Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) as a CST.

  • Three (3) years of experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology field or supervising students in a clinical rotation setting or a combination of the three areas within the past five years. All areas are preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The ability to manage students within clinical experiences.
