Our flagship Ready, Willing & Able (RWA) program provides paid transitional work experience, transitional housing, advanced occupational training, and comprehensive supportive services to individuals experiencing homelessness. The Doe Fund is also one of New York City’s largest nonprofit developers of permanent affordable and supportive housing, with more than 1,900 units in operation or pre-development. The Doe Fund has an annual operating budget of $80 million and a full-time staff of nearly 500, a significant portion of whom are graduates of our programs.

We are seeking a Mental Health Counselor for the Villa residence which is The Doe Fund's newest permanent supportive housing program for homeless men and women living with HIV/AIDS. The program is designed to provide long-term residential care and twenty-four-hour support services in a community environment that maximizes residents' independence while ensuring their physical and emotional security and well-being. Forty-one units will be allocated for residents referred by the New York City HIV/AIDS Services Administration (HASA) and twenty-seven apartments will be for adults referred by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA).

The Mental Health Counselor is responsible for providing supportive case management services to the HASA-funded residents. The successful candidate will have strong clinical and communication skills along with an understanding of working with the HIV/AIDS population.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a caseload and provide regular case management services to these individuals
  • Maintain resident records in compliance with agency and funding standards
  • Conduct and review assessments
  • Develop and implement individual Service Plans and assist residents with achieving their goals geared toward self-sufficiency
  • Monitor and ensure residents are linked to healthcare providers
  • Provide counseling and crisis intervention as necessary
  • Assist residents in securing and maintaining benefits
  • Maintain a liaison with community services including hospitals, substance abuse treatment programs, HRA, and mental health programs
  • Facilitate groups and activities that promote health and independent living skills development
  • Monitor and assist residents with rent payments and budgeting
  • Conduct regular unit inspections
  • Educate residents about approaches to mental health
  • Compile resources on mental health information and treatment strategies
  • Attend ongoing training to enhance the services provided to the residents
  • Assist with completion of HASA’s weekly and monthly reports as well as any other relevant reports
  • Other duties as assigned

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work or related field required
  • License in Clinical Social Work (LCSW) is preferred
  • The ideal candidate must have at least one year of experience working with people who are homeless, living with HIV/AIDS, have substance abuse histories, or suffer from mental illness
  • At least 5 years of experience in the mental health field
  • Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) certification is a plus
  • Knowledge of benefits in the New York City Metro area, HIV/AIDS, psychiatric diagnoses, substance abuse, and mental health issues
  • Solid computer skills – internet, Microsoft Office, and charting database
  • Strong organizational, writing, and communication skills
  • Spanish speaking is a plus, but not required
