Cornell Cooperative Extension has an opening for a temporary 4-H Youth Development Summer Assistant.


The 4-H Youth Development Summer Assistant will work as a part of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Wyoming County team to assist with planning, organizing, and implementing 4-H Youth Development programs and events including county and/or state fair.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Six months related volunteer or work experience.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position, which include transporting supplies and resources from Association office to Fairgrounds.
  • Ability to meet acceptable background check standards.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.
  • Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read, and write proficiently) in English.
  • Ability to work independently and responsibly with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Well organized and ability to coordinate multiple tasks.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with windows-based software including use of the internet and Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Ability to work in a typical office and outdoor environments which may include working in outdoor weather conditions with extreme heat or cold, precipitation on uneven ground; lift, move, or transport materials, positioning self (for example, pulling, bending, reaching, touching, kneeling, using hands to feel/reach) with or without accommodation. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


  • Knowledge of 4-H Youth Development Programs and related procedures.
  • Previous experience with 4-H Youth Development Programming and Fair events.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Administrative Direction - 5%

  • Assist with identifying activities and resources necessary to implement initiatives and projects.
  • Provide supervisor with program related information to assist the budget development process.

Administrative Management - 5%

  • Assist in identifying and recommending programming needs (i.e., program supplies and materials).
  • Assist in solving problems and resolving conflicts that arise within the 4-H Youth Development program utilizing appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Assist with managing program communication and marketing efforts as assigned.

Administrative Coordination/Operation - 85%

  • Maintain pleasant relationships with the public through a variety of contacts – walk-in office visitors, in person fair interaction, telephone, e-mail, and written correspondence.
  • Assist staff in day-to-day coordination of office and fair operational activities.
  • Assist with routine communications and marketing efforts, community events, etc. Provide basic information about programs and events.
  • Perform data entry, program and event registrations, and complete paperwork as assigned.
  • Assist in maintaining and organizing supplies, displays, materials and equipment for the office and those used at the county and/or state fair.
  • Assist with completion and reconciliation of required paperwork including fair registrations, fair entry processing, show program preparation, voucher preparation, etc.
  • Assist in the organization of events such as the daily youth building activities and animal shows.
  • Take pictures and assist with assembling displays.
  • Serve as fair building monitor, as assigned.
  • Perform event set up and break down (room set up, tables, chairs, cleaning up, etc.).
  • Update fair entries and preparation.
  • Assist with fair program preparation, setup, and clean up.
  • Make copies, organize supplies, prepare items for transport to/from fair.
  • Provide assistance at fair shows to facilitate and maintain accurate records of entries and data.
  • Operate basic office equipment including copiers, computers, projectors, calculators, postage meters, and other office equipment, as necessary.
  • Complete and submit accurate activity and progress reports, as requested.
  • Help to maintain a safe, positive, and supportive atmosphere during all activities.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
  • Participate in special events as assigned.
  • Prepare and submit expense reports and/or vouchers in a timely manner per established policy and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality of participant information and data collected.
  • Provide data and information to assist with preparation of reports, impact statements, and success stories for funders, advisory committees, Board and others as requested.
  • Transport self and/or program materials/resources in performing position responsibilities.

Professional Improvement - 5%

  • Participate in all required orientation, training, and/or in-service meetings and events as scheduled/required.

  • Support the association to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Be familiar and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

Policy and Other Duties as Assigned - Applies to all duties and functions

  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Cooperative Extension programs and other duties as assigned.
  • Conduct all programming and activities in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Aware of, and adheres to, established Cornell Cooperative Extension Association policies, procedures, processes, and Skills for Success.
  • Represent Cornell Cooperative Extension to the public, community leaders, colleagues, volunteers, members of Cornell University faculty and staff, government officials and the general public in a professional manner at all times.
  • Perform all assigned duties in a professional, timely, and accurate manner.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance and punctuality.

POSITION DETAILS

Expected Weekly Hours: 20 hours per week (Part-Time)

Hourly Wage: $18.00 per hour

Location: Based from the Warsaw, NY office

Remote Status: Remote work is not available.
