Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schenectady County WIC Nutritionists empower families by delivering participant‑centered, evidence‑based nutrition education that supports lifelong health and well‑being. Nutritionists advance the mission of both the Association and the WIC Program by providing high‑quality guidance, promoting breastfeeding, and ensuring families receive the nutrition resources they need to thrive. Nutritionists also complete required documentation accurately and on time, maintain strict participant confidentiality, collect essential program data, and contribute to strengthening services for women, infants, and children in the community.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition.

  • Experience relevant to the role of the position.

  • Travel Requirements - Ability to meet occasional travel requirements associated with this position. A valid NYS driver's license with the ability to drive and driving record acceptable for Association insurance coverage are required.

  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.

  • Ability to deliver effective programs, maintain confidentiality, and collaborate with staff and partner organizations.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to work effectively with participants, colleagues, and others.

  • Ability to coordinate program activities, including data management, reporting, scheduling, and compliance with funder requirements.

  • Proficiency—or ability to learn—Microsoft Office, internet tools, and program related software.

This position works in a typical office environment with occasional lifting, moving and transporting program materials. This position requires the ability to work in a busy open office with occasional to frequent distractions and opportunities to demonstrate positive collaboration amongst staff, visitors and the public.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Spanish or another non‑English language spoken in the target community.

Position Responsibilities & Essential Functions

Program Responsibilities:

Program Delivery, Evaluation and Applied Research - 80%

  • Deliver nutrition education using existing, evidence‑based materials and multiple teaching methods.

  • Promote WIC program goals, policies, and services to participants and others.

  • Teach research‑based nutrition and healthy lifestyle practices, including breastfeeding education and support; assist with breast pump issuance per NYSDOH guidelines and refer to Breastfeeding Peer Counselors as needed.

  • Use motivational interviewing to provide participant‑centered nutrition guidance, including education on WIC‑approved foods.

  • Conduct dietetic screenings and determine WIC eligibility based on USDA/NYSDOH criteria.

  • Authorize and issue WIC food packages that meet participant nutritional needs.

  • Meet assigned education delivery targets.

  • Collaborate with community agencies and connect families to other CCE and community programs (e.g., EFNEP, Healthy Families, Head Start).

  • Represent CCE Schenectady and the NYS WIC Program in community and public settings.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Coordination and Operation – 15%

  • Complete required program and funder documentation on time.

  • Follow CCE procedures for communication, documentation, scheduling, and work requests.

  • Maintain strong connections with community agencies to link families to needed resources.

  • Maintain, update, and close participant files as appropriate.

  • Protect participant confidentiality at all times.

  • Collect routine program data.

  • Support general coordination tasks, including attending staff meetings, reporting expenses, collaborating with colleagues, and assisting with program marketing.

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.

  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.

  • Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.

  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

Position Details

This is a full-time, nonexempt position (35 hours/week). Compensation paid at the rate of $29.25 per hour. Excellent benefits, based on eligibility, including:
