Social Media Manager

The New York City Council is seeking a dynamic, creative, and politically aware part-time Social Media Manager to support the office’s digital communications, public messaging, media engagement, and community outreach efforts. This role is ideal for someone who understands the intersection of politics, culture, policy and community engagement, and can translate complex issues into compelling, accessible, and engaging content across multiple platforms. The Social Media Manager will report to the Director of Communications and the Deputy Speaker.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage and grow the Deputy Speaker’s digital presence across Instagram, X, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn and other relevant platforms.
  • Develop and execute social media content aligned with office priorities, legislative initiatives, hearings, district events, and community engagement efforts.
  • Draft and schedule posts, captions, statements, newsletters, graphics concepts, reels, and short-form video content.
  • Monitor trends, breaking news, and cultural moments for rapid-response opportunities.
  • Track analytics and engagement performance to help refine content strategy and audience growth.
  • Draft press releases, advisories, talking points, quotes, speeches, newsletters, and other public facing communications.
  • Capture and curate content from hearings, community events, district visits, press conferences, and cultural initiatives.
  • Collaborate with legislative, operations, and constituent services staff to support office-wide communications efforts.
  • Hybrid work environment with some evening and weekend availability required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills with a passion for public service.
  • Experience managing social media platforms and digital engagement.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced political and public-facing environment.
  • Strong judgment, professionalism, and discretion.
  • Ability to respond quickly and professionally in time-sensitive or rapidly evolving situations.
  • Experience with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, photography, and/or video editing is a plus.
  • Creative thinker with strong political instincts and cultural awareness.
  • Highly responsive, organized, and dependable.
  • Able to balance professionalism with engaging and community-centered communications.
  • Comfortable working in rapidly changing environments and under tight deadlines.
  • Availability to work 15-20 hours per week.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

New York City residency is required within 90 days of appointment.
