Community engagement specialist
WHO WE ARE
The Humane League (THL) is a global nonprofit ending the abuse of animals raised for food. THL fosters a high-energy culture of teamwork and mission-driven problem solving, and we have earned recognition as Top Charity from Animal Charity Evaluators for all of their rating periods. Over the past few years, we've grown to a staff of 100+ talented individuals dispersed across the country and around the world. At THL, how animals are treated in the food system is at the forefront of our everyday work. As such, many of our staff are vegan by personal choice, and all of our THL-hosted events offer fully vegan menus. We welcome all mission-aligned candidates to apply, no matter where you are in your journey to end the abuse of animals raised for food. YOUR OPPORTUNITY As Community Engagement Specialist, you will inspire change for animals by cultivating an inclusive community of engaged supporters across THL's social media platforms, sparking conversations that foster connection and further our mission. You will be responsible for engaging with THL's supporters through comments and direct messages, responding thoughtfully to questions and concerns and encouraging supporters to deepen their involvement with our work. You'll also build relationships with potential partners, such as sanctuaries and other animal protection organizations, and test out new community engagement tactics to amplify THL's online presence. While this position is not primarily focused on creating or scheduling regular social media posts, the Community Engagement Specialist will manage community interactions and may contribute to light content creation tasks as needed. They will play a role in shaping THL's content and social media strategy by drawing insights and making recommendations based on community engagement data and current social media trends. This position reports directly to the Associate Director of Social Media. This is a temporary, full-time, remote position. Employment is expected to be approximately twelve months in duration, beginning in early January. This position provides the opportunity for optional domestic and/or international travel, equivalent to 1 or more trips per year. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Empower our community by responding to direct messages and comments on THL's social media posts across platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Bluesky, LinkedIn, and YouTube, connecting meaningfully with our existing audience and potential new supporters.
- Build and maintain relationships with engaged supporters and identify individuals who may be primed to advance to other teams to deepen their involvement with THL.
- Engage with relevant individuals and groups (including supporters, influencers, celebrities, sanctuaries, other animal protection organizations, and companies targeted by THL's campaigns), participating in conversations across social media in order to expand THL's audience and amplify our mission. Identify potential new partners and collaborate with colleagues on the Social Media and Public Relations teams to help build those relationships as needed.
- Establish and maintain documentation of standards for community engagement and moderation across all social media platforms in order to position THL as approachable, responsive, supportive, and present within the animal protection community.
- Influence future content creation through collaborative brainstorms with the Video, Design, and Social Media teams. Leverage analytics within Sprout Social to draw insights from supporter engagement data, and make suggestions based on these findings, as well as social media trends.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of THL's programs and strategy in order to effectively represent our work to supporters. Consult other teams as needed on responses to supporter questions (such as questions about THL's financials, priorities, and positions on specific animal welfare policies).
- Approach community engagement with an awareness of the varied perspectives and experiences represented by THL's audience. Ensure that THL's social media pages remain inclusive spaces by addressing feedback, welcoming differing viewpoints, steering conversations towards community-building and impact for animals, and moderating comments for harmful language.
- Identify and test new and unique ways for THL to engage with our community and help our supporters feel seen and heard across social media platforms, and other channels as appropriate. Adapt our community engagement strategy as needed in response to algorithm changes.
- Proactively explore the online space and seek out opportunities for THL to join conversations outside of our active social media platforms.
- Experience: 2+ years of experience in a role focused on community building, via social media, community organizing, customer service, or another field. Familiarity with social media platforms.
- Verbal and Written Communication: Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to craft personalized responses that foster connection with supporters and represent THL in a positive and professional manner. Ability to find common ground with supporters who hold diverse perspectives, and to hone an engaging and approachable social media brand personality, adapting tone across different platforms while remaining true to THL's core voice. Communicates effectively and concisely with colleagues across verbal and written formats, providing clear instructions and relevant updates.
- Problem Solving and Decision Making: Ability to resolve problems effectively, leveraging available data and resources, and consulting other staff members when appropriate. Gathers and analyzes relevant information and social media metrics to support decision making and assists in identifying potential risks. Demonstrates sound judgement when engaging and setting boundaries with supporters.

Participates in group discussions, gives and receives feedback, and navigates difficult conversations with sensitivity. Contributes to a positive team culture and an environment where diverse ideas are valued.
- Organization: Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to balance multiple priorities and deadlines, and to suggest process improvements. Uses time management to plan, prioritize, and complete work.
- Strategic Thinking: Ability to identify patterns, understand organizational goals and policies, and recognize how tasks and projects contribute to larger strategic objectives. Ability to deduce the underlying interests and motivations behind supporter comments and use this to inform effective communication.
- Global Perspective: Approaches work with an understanding of the global nature of the organization's programs. Supports the integration of global perspectives into departmental work with guidance from senior team members.
