Position Summary
The Edible Academy Camp Educator will lead a group of up to 18 children in a variety of garden-based education activities, including gardening projects, science investigations, games, culinary and art activities, and explorations of the New York Botanical Garden grounds during two 3-week summer camps. Establish a safe, fun and engaging environment for campers to learn together. Develop and lead active and experiential garden, science, art, and nature programs and activities as per the curriculum and collaborate with camp staff team to lead activities in the gardens and classrooms of the Edible Academy and throughout the NYBG landscape. Supervise and mentor Camp Assistant Educators on daily responsibilities and duties.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist with planning and coordinating daily and weekly camp schedules, including developing, planning and implementing garden-based lessons for the campers based on curriculum.
- Support Assistant Educators in their role of supporting campers with daily tasks, i.e. helping campers keep track of personal items, participate in large and small group activities, and escorting small groups of students to the restroom.
- Build strong relationships with Campers and Camp staff
- Support Camp Staff to facilitate safe and orderly daily drop-off and pick-up events that include sign-in, sign out.
- Maintain close communication with Camp staff to mitigate safety, behavioral and scheduling issues
Qualifications
- Outgoing and friendly with excellent oral communications skills essential.
- Candidate must have experience teaching garden-based education programming outdoors with groups of children with varied learning needs as well as relevant student age group experience based on position.
- Candidates must have experience working with groups of children in an outdoor, informal, experiential education setting.
- Candidate must be responsible, punctual, professional, motivated, self-starter and able to mentor others.
- A background in science, education and/or museum studies required.
- Candidate must have experience teaching engaging inquiry-based lessons with live plants and living organisms.
- A foreign language is helpful but not essential.
Physical Demand & Work Environment
- Must be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. This role requires standing for extended periods of time and walking throughout the Garden grounds. There may be repetitive movements throughout the workday. Position requires standing, walking, bending, lifting, and active engagement throughout the camp day, including the ability to lift and move program supplies and equipment as needed.
Work Schedule
- This is a temporary part-time position.
- Candidates must be available to participate in orientation, training, and preparation sessions taking place in mid-June 2026 from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
- Candidates must also be available to work the full 6-week summer camp schedule:
- July 6 – July 24, 2026
- August 3 – August 21, 2026
- Camp hours are 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM.
Rate
- $25 per hour
