POSITION: Lifeguard
DEPARTMENT: Health & Fitness Center
REPORTS TO: Operations Manager
STATUS: Non-Exempt, Part-Time
Hourly rate: $16 to 16.50 per hour
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The primary responsibility as a lifeguard is to prevent drowning and other injuries from occurring. Candidates must be able to ensure the safety of patrons by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors. This person will need to be able to solve on-the-job issues by utilizing effective critical thinking and decision-making skills and possess the ability to work with diverse populations.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Your first responsibility always is to protect the well-being of each individual swimmer.
- Opening and closing the pool each day according to scheduled hours.
- Actively guards and scan the pool area at all times; refrains from socializing while guarding.
- Communicate and enforce all Northeast College policies, procedures, and New York State of Health regulations in a personable and professional manner.
- Educate patrons, inform them of the purpose, and need for rules and regulations.
- Maintain watch over the pool area ensuring a secure and safe environment.
- Respond quickly to all injuries, incidents, and emergencies as directed by college policy.
- Administer any first aid needed by a victim of an accident.
- Document any incidents and/or injuries.
- Never leave the pool unattended; always lock the door when exiting the pool.
- Provide a welcoming environment for all patrons.
- Maintain a clean pool environment.
- Complete all records and reports as required.
- Attend and participate in regular in-service trainings.
Perform other duties as assigned.
MENTAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:
- Ability to react to emergency situations by quick movements, strenuous activity, and on occasion assist or lift persons in distress of varying weights.
- Required to remain alert to dangerous situations while sitting, standing, or walking for various lengths of time.
- Ability to recognize and respond to emergencies through knowledge and application of lifeguard surveillance and rescue techniques.
- Ability to enforce pool policies while providing a high level of customer service to students, faculty/staff, and community members.
- Arrives prepared and on time for work and consistently demonstrates service excellence.
- Able to assess a situation and make an informed decision independently.
QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS:
- Current ARC certification
- Current CPR and First Aid certifications
- Knowledge of on-site protocols, operational procedures, and safety policies
- Minimum of 18 years of age
- Excellent communication skills
