Assistant Controller
Mattos Hospitality is seeking an experienced, highly organized, and detail-oriented Assistant Financial Controller to join our Corporate Office team in New York.
This is a hands-on accounting role for someone who enjoys being closely involved in the day-to-day financial operations of a hospitality business. The Assistant Financial Controller will support the Financial Controller and Chief Financial Officer across revenue reconciliation, accounts payable, general ledger activity, month-end close, financial reporting, and other core accounting functions while working closely with our restaurant teams to maintain accurate and timely financial records.
The ideal candidate has strong accounting fundamentals, exceptional attention to detail, and a practical, solutions-oriented approach to their work. They are comfortable managing recurring deadlines, investigating discrepancies, maintaining organized financial records, and working collaboratively across both finance and operations.
This position is based in the Mattos Hospitality Corporate Office in New York.
Key Focus and Responsibilities
- Perform daily revenue reconciliations across restaurant locations, reviewing sales, deposits, comps, house accounts, and other transactions for accuracy.
- Prepare daily and weekly financial reporting and assist with KPI reporting related to revenue, COGS, payroll, and labor.
- Support the accounts payable process, including invoice review and entry, vendor payments, account statement reconciliations, and maintaining accurate vendor records.
- Prepare general ledger reconciliations and journal entries, including bank activity, accruals, prepayments, inventory adjustments, and other month-end entries.
- Assist with the monthly close process by preparing reconciliations, schedules, supporting documentation, and assigned financial reports.
- Maintain balance sheet reconciliations and supporting workpapers, researching and resolving discrepancies as needed.
- Assist with the preparation of monthly financial statements and reporting packages for review by the Financial Controller and CFO.
- Complete tip and commission reconciliations and investigate discrepancies between POS, payroll, and internal records.
- Support inventory reconciliation and cost of goods analysis across restaurant locations.
- Assist with sales tax and other applicable tax reporting and maintain supporting documentation.
- Provide support for annual budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
- Maintain organized accounting records and documentation to support internal controls, audits, and financial reviews.
- Work with restaurant managers and department leaders to research accounting questions, resolve discrepancies, and ensure financial information is submitted accurately and on time.
- Assist with external audit and tax requests by preparing schedules and gathering supporting documentation.
- Identify opportunities to improve day-to-day accounting processes and help implement more efficient and consistent workflows.
- Provide additional accounting and finance support as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
- 3+ years of accounting experience; restaurant or hospitality experience strongly preferred.
- Solid understanding of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, accounts payable, and month-end close.
- Experience with restaurant revenue reconciliation, inventory, COGS, or multi-unit accounting is a plus.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to manage recurring deadlines and multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Highly organized, dependable, and comfortable working both independently and collaboratively.
- Strong Excel skills and experience with accounting, POS, payroll, and restaurant financial systems preferred.
