Join our dynamic team as the NYSDEC Summer Camp Health Director for Summer 2026! The Health Director (1 per camp) is a vital role dedicated to ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all campers and staff during our exciting summer programs. This summer position offers a unique opportunity to lead health services in a vibrant outdoor environment, fostering a positive and safe experience for campers engaged in environmental education and recreational activities. As the Health Director, you will oversee all health-related operations, coordinate with camp leadership, and implement best practices to promote health and safety throughout the camp season.
About DEC Camps:
DEC Camps have four overnight environmental education camps run by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. Our four summer camps are located across the state in Saranac Lake, Lake George, the Catskills, and Allegany. Our popular and engaging programs draw 11–17-year-old campers from across New York State for life changing experiences in the outdoors. The camp season starts in early June and runs through mid-August. The work week is from Sunday afternoon through Friday afternoon.
Role Overview:
The Camp Health Director will be responsible for maintaining a safe, healthy environment for all camp participants and staff. Responsibilities include: managing medical supplies, providing first aid and medical care as needed, administering medications, maintaining health records, and promoting health and safety protocols as per state guidelines. The Camp Health Director will collaborate closely with camp staff to ensure the well-being of participants and respond effectively to any health concerns.
Camp Health Directors earn $1,022.80 a week for the 11 week season, plus room and board. This is a state position and staff have the option to join the CSEA union (which offers tuition reimbursement) and the NYS retirement fund. For the right candidate, this can be a reoccurring summer position for several years.
Required Certifications / Licenses:
- Must be a NYS certified EMT, Paramedic, LPN, RN, PA or MD
- CPR/AED certification acceptable to the Department of Health & in its first year of certification.
- Must have and maintain a valid Driver's license.
Specific duties include, but not limited to:
- Distributes and monitors campers medications;
- Maintains records of all medications, injuries, accidents as required by the Department of Health
- Monitors camps living quarters for health and safety concerns
- Works with Camp Director to transport campers as needed to and from local urgent care, emergency rooms, doctor offices and field trip locations.
- Meets camper's parents/guardians during camper check-in to review medical forms
- Maintains camp's lost and found, camp's supply of bedding, towels and extra camper clothing
- Assists Camp Director with camper homesickness and evaluation of camper's ability to stay at camp when issues arise such as homesickness, inability to follow rules and medication complications
- Maintains camp infirmary, monitors environmental and individual's health (staff and campers) and prepares accident and illness reports; and
- On call 24/7 while camp is in session to accompany sick or injured campers to the hospital or urgent care.
