Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery
The Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University seeks a dynamic, passionate, and collaborative physician leader to serve as its next Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery. The Chair will align the department's goals with the School of Medicine's strategic plans and play a key role in fostering a unified and forward-looking approach to clinical, academic, and research excellence. This individual will work to develop an innovative strategic vision for the Department, ensuring it remains at the forefront of basic science, translational and clinical research, education, and transformative clinical care. The Chair will also serve as Co-Chair for the Neurosciences Institute and will be a key contributor to the systematic growth of the neurosciences program across the region through care delivery, research, and education.
The Renaissance School of Medicine is a public medical school and part of Stony Brook University, a designated flagship institution of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. The School of Medicine educates 500+ medical students, 750+ residents and fellows with 68 ACGME accredited residencies and fellowships in a broad range of specialties. The School of Medicine is one of five health sciences schools within the overarching Stony Brook Medicine organization, which is also home to 628-bed Stony Brook University Hospital and Stony Brook Children's Hospital, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital, and multiple outpatient care sites.
The Department of Neurosurgery consists of 12 distinguished clinical and 2 research faculty members providing top-tier clinical services and scholarships recognized locally and nationally. The Department has a rich history and is renowned for its collaborative efforts across various disciplines and over the years has cultivated exceptional neurosurgeons through its residency training program.
Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Chair will lead a talented team of clinicians, researchers, and educators, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment encouraging scientific discovery, academic and clinical excellence, and faculty development. The Chair will set and execute a strategic vision to advance the Department's research portfolio and enhance its scholarly and scientific reputation while growing the Department to expand clinical and clinical research operations. Additionally, the Chair will represent the Department within the broader educational and medical communities, both internally and externally with the Neurosciences Institute and broader health system.
The successful candidate will be a leader with a demonstrated ability to set a vision, advance a collaborative culture and effectively inspire, manage, mentor, and develop a team of neurosurgeons and advanced practitioners. An MD/DO degree is required, as is completion of postgraduate medical education in an ACGME-approved residency and fellowship program with current Board certification in neurosurgery
