Scope of Work:

The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) is a six-week program that prepares newly arrived refugee youth to succeed at their grade level in the New York City public school system. Up to 130 students from ages 5 – 21 from over 20 countries will participate in academic, creative arts, physical education, and other academic classes. Field trips are held on Fridays.


The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy is seeking a teacher who will create daily physical education classes for middle/high school students, incorporating individual and team sports including but not limited to badminton and soccer. The teacher will contribute to the program’s goals of fostering students’ social-emotional development and building a strong sense of community among the students and staff.


Major Responsibilities:

  • Participate in mandatory school programing.

  • Participate in instructional planning sessions, trainings, and all program meetings.

  • Plan and implement a culturally- and developmentally-responsive curriculum

  • Submit daily lesson plans on a weekly basis in advance of the date of instruction

  • Utilize multilingual instructional approaches for English Language Learners

  • Collaborate with Classroom Culture Lead Teachers and staff in planning and reviewing student progress

  • Lead classroom climate in accordance with Academy philosophy and protocols

  • Engage in instructional coaching cycles and participate in weekly meetings

  • Pending demand, provide early and/or after-care supervision to a cohort of students

  • Review student progress and make instructional adjustments as needed

  • Substitute as needed for colleagues' classes

  • Complete All Staff Survey to provide feedback on NYSA

  • Comply with all IRC policies and protocols

  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Experience with teaching, leading, or coaching group sports programming required

  • Experience with teaching, leading, or coaching soccer and badminton strongly desired

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in physical education or related field strongly desired

  • Experience teaching English Language Learners/multilingual learners strongly desired

  • Ability to work well with people of diverse cultural backgrounds strongly desired

  • Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations is strongly desired

  • Strong relationship building and classroom management skills strongly desired

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Highly organized, dependable, responsive, and collaborative work style

  • Strong team player who is self-directed and organized

  • Strength in cultural humility-building

  • Fluency in written and spoken English required. Second language proficiency in relevant language highly desirable (Arabic, Dari, Farsi, French, Fulani, Haitian Creole, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian.)

  • All hiring is contingent on passing a background checks and submission of an annual physical form.If the school is located at a New York City Public School site, additional fingerprinting may be required.


Union Eligible:

This position is represented by the OPEIU union and subject to the terms and conditions of a collective bargaining agreement.

Compensation: ( Pay Range: $27.50) Posted pay ranges apply to US-based candidates. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget. Exact offers are calibrated by work location, individual candidate experience and skills relative to the defined job requirements.
