Cook I- Food Services Department- Full Time
Schedule: Fridays through Mondays: 5:30am-4:00pm
Rate of Pay: $17.00 per hour + 1.00 Weekend Warrior Shift Differential

The Rescue Mission is hiring a Full Time Cook I position for the Food Services Department in Syracuse, NY . The Cook I is responsible for preparing and/or directing the preparation of food to be served complying with all applicable sanitation, health, and personal hygiene standards and following established food production programs and procedures. Responsible for appropriate use of facility supplies and equipment to minimize loss, waste, and fraud.

Additional Duties:
The Cook I position will manage food preparation and service for the Rescue Mission. In this position, you will support the food preparation of our Crossroads Facility as well as the Syracuse Emergency Shelter. This role includes determining food and supply requirements, ensuring timely availability of materials, and properly storing food with appropriate labeling. The Cook I will follow standard recipes and special diet orders, ensuring food safety and compliance with safety and work practices, including universal precautions and fire/safety plans. This position requires confidentiality of all data, cooperation with coworkers, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Strong communication skills, especially in sensitive situations, are essential, as is promoting positive relations with residents, families, and guests. Regular in-person attendance, adherence to training requirements, and a safety-first mindset are key responsibilities, along with completing other duties as assigned.

Education Requirements:

• Associates Degree in restaurant/food management required; bachelor’s degree preferred
• 3 - 5 years’ experience in restaurant/food services.
• Experience with institutional-size food preparation equipment and safety procedures

• Knowledge of large-scale menu planning and food preparation
• Proficient knowledge of Combi Oven and Cook Chill Systems
• Communication skills; able to speak and write clearly and directly

• Manages time efficiently; responds quickly to time-sensitive issues
• Maintains a calm professional presence
• Guest-focused; service oriented

Additional Requirements:

• Must follow CDC guidelines regarding Covid-19, including but not limited to, wearing a mask when working.
• Full vaccination against Covid-19 (including Booster when eligible) is strongly encouraged.
