About the Department

The Community Impact Department encompasses our Youth Programs, Community Programs and Youth Events. NYRR is one of the largest non-profit providers of youth and community fitness programming in New York City (with a growing national/international footprint). The Youth Program team develops, administers, and supports an evolving portfolio of youth running programs and resources used by schools, community centers, and families throughout New York City and nationwide. NYRR's flagship youth program, Rising New York Road Runners, brings the benefits of physical activity to various sites to help children develop the ability, confidence, and desire to be physically active for life. The Community Program team develops, administers, and supports a comprehensive portfolio of programs including our renowned NYRR Striders walking/fitness program for older adults, our NYRR Open Run platform that provides free running and walking racing, and community-building opportunities in parks across the city, and bespoke programs such as NYRR Run for the Future and Youth Ambassadors that provide deep engagement and lifelong skills such as running techniques and public speaking. The Youth Events team oversees the development and execution of over 35 Rising NYRR events per year, including events associated with our Five-Borough Series and the TCS New York City Marathon, each serving 100-1000 or more participants, and the support of other youth and community-based efforts.

About the Internship

The New York Road Runners Internship program is a paid, 21-week experience in which interns have the opportunity to learn from the best in the non-profit business. Interns will work collaboratively with professionals in their field of study and will have opportunities to network across the organization. The program will include professional development events and a chance to make a direct impact on the communities in New York City by working select events. Interns will receive onboarding and training to learn about NYRR and gain the knowledge needed to best perform in their role.

Internship dates will be Monday, June 15, 2026 to Friday, November 13, 2026.

The Community Program Intern will play a vital role by supporting the team with project coordination, event logistics, taking on administrative tasks and research, and contributing fresh new ideas and perspectives to enhance program effectiveness. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented, organized, and mission-driven individual interested in community programs, youth development, and event operations.

You don't need to have run a marathon for this job, but it's a big plus if you are a runner and have a good understanding of the youth running community, particularly in New York City, as that's going to your audience!

Intern Responsibilities (primary and secondary duties):

  • Provide administrative support to the annual Run for the Future & Youth Ambassadorcohort
  • Assistwith attendance tracking, program documentation, and day-to-day operational needs
  • Support uniform distribution, race-day preparation, and event-daylogistics
  • Assistwith overall program coordination to ensure sessions and activities run smoothly
  • Assistwith planning and execution of 15th Anniversary events and activations
  • Support the launch and administration of the new Run for the Future mentorship program
  • Assistwith participant tracking, scheduling, communications, and engagement support
  • Assistwith data tracking, reporting, and progress monitoring across program initiatives
  • Provide general administrative and project support

Internship Hours:

  • Interns will work 25 hours per week Monday through Friday.
  • Interns are required to work the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 1st, as well two other weekend events (dates to be determined).
  • Other weekend event-based work may be required and will be evaluated as needed based on position.

Internship Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in an Undergraduate or Master’s program working towards a degree in Public Administration, Public Health, Community Development or similar fields
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work occasional weekends or evenings
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Punctual and dependable

Other Requirements:

  • First Aid and CPR/AED certification (or willingness to obtain certification through NYRR-sponsored training)

Physical Requirements:

  • The ability to be on your feet, outside in the elements for the duration of event shifts
  • Able to run/walk up to 3.2 miles at a slow pace a plus, but not required

Salary: $22/hour
